Srinagar: A three-day skill development workshop on ‘Translation in Indian Languages—Kashmiri and Sanskrit’ commenced on Monday at the University of Kashmir’s main campus. Organized by the Department of Kashmiri in collaboration with the National Translation Mission and the Central Institute of Indian Languages, the workshop aims to enhance translation skills, promote linguistic exchange, and encourage the use of Indian languages in academic and literary fields.
During the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan emphasized the significance of translation in bridging languages and knowledge systems, asserting that improved translation skills can enhance accessibility to academic and literary content across different languages. Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in fostering multilingual scholarship and preserving linguistic diversity. Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal reiterated the university’s commitment to supporting programs that promote engagement with Indian languages and translation practices. Dr. Tariq Khan, Officer In-charge of the National Translation Mission, addressed the objectives of the mission, underscoring the role of translation in knowledge dissemination and cultural exchange. Prof. Aejaz Mohammad Sheikh, Dean of the School of Arts, Languages and Literature, welcomed participants and stressed the importance of workshops in developing practical translation skills and enhancing academic engagement with regional languages. The workshop features expert lectures, practical translation exercises, and interactive sessions focused on Kashmiri and Sanskrit texts, attracting students and research scholars from various language disciplines across the campus.
