New Delhi: Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will inaugurate a 30-bedded ESIC hospital at Ompora in Budgam district on April 24, marking a significant expansion of healthcare infrastructure under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme in Jammu and Kashmir.
The facility, developed at an estimated cost of ₹165 crore, is designed to be expanded to 100 beds in a phased manner and is expected to benefit over 50,000 workers and their family members across Budgam and adjoining districts.
Officials said the hospital has been constructed over a five-acre campus and includes a hospital block, service building and 32 residential quarters, with a total built-up area of around 24,500 square metres.
Equipped with modern healthcare infrastructure, the facility features three modular operation theatres, a dedicated emergency OT, four patient lifts and a central HVAC system to maintain optimal conditions. It also incorporates eco-friendly systems such as solar water heating and sewage and effluent treatment plants.
In a special gesture during the inauguration ceremony, the Union Minister is also scheduled to honour construction workers who contributed to the completion of the project.
The new hospital is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation scheme in the Union Territory, which currently covers over 1.83 lakh insured persons and nearly seven lakh beneficiaries.
The ESI scheme, introduced in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989, has since expanded to cover all districts, with primary healthcare services being delivered through multiple dispensaries and branch offices across the region. Secondary care is currently available at the ESIC Model Hospital in Bari-Brahmana, along with tie-ups with private hospitals for specialised treatment.
Officials said the Budgam facility will help reduce patient load on existing institutions while improving access to quality healthcare services for insured workers, particularly in central Kashmir. PIB
