Jammu: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday called for embracing the teachings of Lord Mahavira to promote peace, compassion and brotherhood, while addressing the Mahavir JanmaKalyanak celebrations held in Jammu.
The event, organised by S.S Jain Sabha to mark Mahavir Jayanti, was attended by prominent citizens, officials and members of the Jain community.
Extending his greetings on the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the relevance of Lord Mahavira’s teachings of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Anekantavada (pluralism), stressing the importance of right faith, knowledge and conduct in contemporary society.
Referring to the global situation marked by conflicts and unrest, he said humanity must draw lessons from Lord Mahavira’s philosophy to foster enduring peace and strengthen bonds of brotherhood. “True progress stems from responsibility and accountability to one’s actions. To build a better future, we must bridge divides and foster trust through understanding diverse cultures, ideas and experiences,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor also underscored the role of India on the global stage, stating that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the country is inspiring the world with the message that peace is rooted in strength and courage. He said the present time calls for building bridges rather than battlefields.
Highlighting the philosophical depth of Anekantavada, he said the doctrine promotes intellectual humility and recognises the multifaceted nature of truth. He cautioned against rigid viewpoints, noting that mistaking opinions for absolute truth can erode balance in society.
He further emphasised that Lord Mahavira’s teachings on introspection, discipline, restraint and truth have the potential to elevate both individuals and society. “By internalising values such as non-violence, non-possession and austerity, individuals can contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” he said.
Calling upon the youth to adopt non-violence in thought and action, the Lieutenant Governor also stressed the need to reform attitudes towards nature. He described Ahimsa as not only an ethical principle but also an effective approach towards environmental protection.
He said Lord Mahavira’s legacy continues to serve as a guiding framework for navigating complexities of modern life and remains relevant for every generation.
On the occasion, the Lieutenant Governor also felicitated achievers from various fields. Among those present were Justice Rajnesh Oswal, Members of Legislative Assembly Yudhvir Sethi and Arvind Gupta, senior police and civil administration officials, and office bearers of S.S Jain Sabha, including its president Suneel Jain.
The event witnessed participation from people belonging to different walks of life, reflecting the spirit of unity and shared cultural heritage.
