The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at the National Institute of Technology Srinagar organised a one-day workshop on Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) awareness, focusing on “Promoting Quality and Safety in Everyday Products.”

Held under the BIS ECE Student Chapter, the workshop aimed to sensitise students about the importance of standards, their development, and their application in engineering as well as daily life.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Ashok Kumar, BIS ECE Student Mentor, under the guidance of Head of Department Dr. Gh. Rasool Begh.

Dr. Iqra Altaf Gilani, Nodal Officer (BIS NIT Srinagar), and Shri Sumit Kashyap, Consultant–Standardization, also played key roles in organising the session, with support from student coordinators.

Mr Devansh Deolkar and Mr Ashish Tiwari, Scientists ‘E’ from the Bureau of Indian Standards were the The Guests of Honour, delivered an interactive session highlighting the significance of standards, their formulation, and their role in ensuring product quality and safety.

The speakers elaborated on BIS functions such as standard formulation, product certification, and compulsory registration schemes.

The session placed special emphasis on the ECE domain, discussing the relevance of standards in areas like SCADA systems, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), communication technologies, system security, and electronic applications. Participants were also introduced to the role of LITDC and its sectional committees in shaping technical standards.

In his message, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia emphasised the importance of integrating standardisation into technical education.

He said that awareness of BIS standards is essential for budding engineers to ensure quality, reliability, and safety in product design and innovation. Such workshops play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic learning and industry requirements, Prof. Kanaujia said

Institute Registrar, Prof. Atikur Rehman that fostering a culture of standardisation among students is essential for producing industry-ready professionals.

“Understanding quality benchmarks and compliance frameworks not only enhances technical competence but also enables young engineers to contribute effectively to innovation, safety, and sustainable development in the country,” he added.

It was followed by vibrant question-and-answer session concluded the workshop, where students explored topics related to standardisation processes, certification procedures, and career opportunities in BIS and allied sectors.

The workshop was efficiently supported by student coordinators Harshita Pratihar, Anser Choudhary, Lakshya Mohtra, and Avantika Choudhary, who ensured the smooth conduct of the event.
