New Delhi: The Government has revoked the detention of Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, reiterating its commitment to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive dialogue with all stakeholders.
Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, under the provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) following a serious law and order situation in Leh on September 24, 2025. The detention was aimed at maintaining public order in the region. He has already served nearly half of the period prescribed under the Act.
In the intervening months, the Government has actively engaged with various community leaders and stakeholders in Ladakh to address local aspirations and concerns. However, recurring bandhs and protests in the region have adversely impacted students, job seekers, businesses, tourism, and the overall economy, contrary to the peace-loving character of the society.
“After due consideration, the Government has decided to revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk to further our objective of fostering a climate of stability and mutual trust in Ladakh,” an official statement said.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh and expressed hope that ongoing issues in the region would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms.
