Srinagar : The Indian Army fired warning shots Thursday night after several Pakistani drones were reportedly spotted flying close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, official sources said on Friday.
They said the drones were spotted in the Keran sector flying very close to the LoC, following which Indian Army fired some warning shots.
“Following the warning shots, the drones went back,” said a source. The Keran sector is strategically sensitive due to its proximity to traditional infiltration routes used by terrorists over the years.
Defence sources have not officially said anything on the incident.
Over the past few years drone sightings along the LoC and the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir have largely been concentrated in the Jammu sector. The drones have been intercepted in districts such as Samba, Kathua and Jammu.
The spotting of Pakistani drones in Keran presents a new security challenge. Security agencies believe drones in this region could be used not only for surveillance but also to aid infiltration attempts or drop weapons, communication devices and narcotics.
The LoC is Kashmir has been by and large calm since Operation Sindoor last year. There has been no major ceasefire violation along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir after the Operation Sindoor. Earlier this year Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said 139 ceasefire violations were recorded in 2025, of which 124 occurred during Operation Sindoor.
During Operation Sindoor last year, India had deployed indigenous kamikaze drones such as Nagastra, Israeli-origin systems including Heron Mk2 and Harop,, besides swarm drones for surveillance and precision strikes, signalling a major shift toward automated, tech-driven warfare.
The Pakistan Air Force on the other hand had employed Songar armed drones, and Turkish-designed Yihaa-III suicide drones. But these were shot down by India’s India’s S-400 air defence system and other laser based weaponry.
