Jammu : Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, the Northern Army Commander, emphasized the strategic significance of Jammu and Kashmir in India’s national-security framework during the 10th Veterans-Day celebrations in Rajouri.
Addressing the 10th Veterans Day gathering in Rajouri Lt General Sharma highlighted the region’s geographical importance, military ethos, and human resources, noting that Jammu and Kashmir contributes approximately 4 to 5 percent of personnel to India’s border security forces, a notable figure given its population of around 1.5 crore. Lt Gen. Sharma praised the rich military legacy of the region, referencing the distinguished performance of regiments such as the JAK Rifles and Dogra units, which embody a spirit of patriotism and sacrifice. He acknowledged the presence of nearly 45,000 veterans and 975 “Veer Nari” in the Union Territory, who continue to serve the nation in various capacities, particularly in disaster management and civic roles, thereby enhancing military-civil relations. The commander recounted the vital role of veterans during Operation Sindoor, where their experience and local knowledge significantly boosted troop morale. He expressed pride in the public participation during the commemorative events held from January 8 to January 14, culminating in the closing ceremony, and commended the Dhruv motorcycle rally for its demonstration of courage and endurance across challenging terrains. Medical camps were organized prior to the main event, providing essential medical assistance and distributing equipment such as blood-pressure machines and e-rickshaws to veterans and their families. Lt Gen. Sharma noted that joint efforts between the Army and civil administration have effectively translated welfare schemes into tangible outcomes for veterans in remote areas. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of veterans and their families, promising to address concerns raised regarding medical services and facilities. The commander expressed gratitude to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the civil administration for their ongoing support and cooperation.
