Tourists advised to avoid avalanche-prone areas

Srinagar : Light to moderate snowfall was recorded over higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, while several low-lying areas received light rain during the past 24 hours, officials said on Thursday.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Meteorological Department, Sadhna Top and Razdan Top recorded the highest snowfall accumulation in the last 48 hours, with two feet each.

Gurez Valley in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district and Zojila Pass received one foot of snow, while Sonamarg recorded eight to ten inches.

Popular tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Chandanwari in Pahalgam received three to four inches and two to three inches of snow, respectively.

Officials said that there are currently no indications of any significant Western Disturbances affecting Jammu and Kashmir until at least January 20, although a few feeble systems may bring isolated showers over scattered areas.

Weather forecasts suggested that temperatures are likely to remain cold across the Union Territory, with higher reaches continuing to witness snowfall, while lower regions experience intermittent rain.

Authorities have advised residents and travellers, particularly in snow-bound hilly areas, to exercise caution.

The JKUTDMA, in a statement, said that an avalanche with a low danger level is likely to occur above 2,300 meters in Bandipora district over the next 24 hours.

It has advised residents and travellers to avoid avalanche-prone areas and strictly follow official safety advisories. In case of emergencies, people are urged to dial 112 immediately for assistance, JKUTDMA officials said.

The officials said that despite moderate snowfall in popular destinations like Gulmarg and Sonamarg, road connectivity remains largely operational, though travellers should check weather conditions and exercise caution while visiting higher altitude regions
