Jammu Expressing concern over the continuing dilution of the community’s cultural and linguistic ethos, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has stressed the need for sustained efforts to preserve the Kashmiri Pandit legacy and emphasised that preserving the community’s cultural, linguistic and civilisational ethos is essential for sustaining Kashmir’s composite culture, which remains incomplete without the Kashmiri Pandits.
The Minister said that the Modi government has taken decisive and sustained action against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir over the past eleven years, resulting in a significant decline in terror incidents, stone-pelting and targeted killings. He said this reflects strong political will, and marks a clear departure from earlier approaches that lacked firmness in dealing with terrorism.
Dr. Jitendra Singh addressed a program commemorating the death anniversary of Pandit Prem Nath Bhat, a prominent lawyer and journalist who was a victim of terrorism in 1989. He paid tribute to Pandit Bhat, emphasizing that his sacrifice represents the broader suffering of the Kashmiri Pandit community due to terrorism and targeted violence. The Minister highlighted the severe human suffering caused by terrorism, which has disrupted social harmony in Kashmir and led to the neglect of the human rights of terrorism victims, particularly the Kashmiri Pandits. Dr. Singh noted the extraordinary resilience of the Kashmiri Pandit community, which has managed to survive and thrive despite decades of displacement. He underscored the importance of their contributions to the region’s education, literature, and social values, which have played a stabilizing role in Kashmiri society. He expressed concern over the erosion of the community’s cultural and linguistic heritage and stressed the necessity of preserving their legacy to maintain Kashmir’s composite culture. The Minister assured that the government is committed to addressing the long-standing demands of the Kashmiri Pandit community. He encouraged the community to compile a structured list of their demands, including those already met by the government, to facilitate a clear representation to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Dr. Singh reiterated that the government’s approach focuses not only on rehabilitation but also on preserving the cultural and social fabric of the Valley, ensuring that the contributions of the Kashmiri Pandit community are recognized and sustained for future generations.
