New Delhi :Rajya Sabha MP and J&K BJP President Sat Sharma, raised the issue of grave climatic challenges being faced by Jammu & Kashmir during the Zero Hour in the Upper House.
Raising the matter in the Rajaya Sabha Sharma said that increasing vulnerability of Jammu & Kashmir to climatic disturbances has raised significant concerns, prompting calls for enhanced financial and technical assistance from the Central Government. Sharma pointed out alarming changes in climate patterns within the region, including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, and a surge in extreme weather events such as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides. He specifically referenced a recent flash flood in the Chashoti area of Padar, which resulted in loss of life and property, underscoring the urgent need for scientific and preventive measures to mitigate future incidents. While acknowledging the importance of initiatives like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the National Adaptation Fund for Climate Change (NAFCC), Sharma emphasized that Jammu & Kashmir requires focused attention and advanced resources to implement climate-resilient strategies effectively. He advocated for the upgrading of climate-monitoring and early-warning systems, urging the Government of India to deploy modern technologies such as Doppler Radar systems, satellite-based monitoring, and ground sensor networks in vulnerable areas. These advancements are expected to enhance atmospheric surveillance and facilitate timely alerts, thereby minimizing damage during emergencies. Sharma expressed gratitude to key government leaders for their proactive measures during past natural calamities, which have ensured timely relief and support for the people of Jammu & Kashmir. He reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the region’s residents, highlighting that strengthening climate resilience is crucial not only for disaster management but also for protecting livelihoods and promoting sustainable development. He appealed for comprehensive assistance from the Centre to better prepare Jammu & Kashmir for future climatic challenges.
