Leaders Meet to Plan Smooth Functioning of Parliament Starting Today
NEW DELHI — The Government convened an all-party meeting today at the Parliament House Annexe to seek the cooperation of opposition parties for the smooth functioning of the upcoming Winter Session.
The meeting was chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha J. P. Nadda, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs. Floor leaders from key opposition parties, including Congress’s Gourav Gogoi, TMC’s Derek O’Brien, and DMK’s Tiruchi Shiva, were also present.
Following the discussions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the meeting was held in a “positive atmosphere.” He confirmed that the Government appealed to the leaders of all political parties to cooperate to ensure a productive session in both Houses.
The Winter Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin tomorrow, Monday, December 1, and will continue until December 19, spanning 15 sittings over 19 days. The government’s legislative agenda includes a slew of key bills, such as the Atomic Energy Bill, 2025, which aims to open up the civil nuclear sector, and the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, 2025.
The Opposition, however, is expected to aggressively raise issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the general state of the economy. The government’s appeal for cooperation comes ahead of what is anticipated to be a politically charged session.
