Srinagar : On the eve of Constitution Day, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled translated versions of the Indian Constitution in nine languages, including Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Odia, and Assamese. Notably, this marks the first translation of the Constitution into Kashmiri, a significant milestone for the region’s linguistic heritage.
The Kashmiri translation was executed by a team from the University of Kashmir under the Ministry of Law, with support from the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore. The project commenced in September 2023 and is set for completion in March 2025, coordinated by Prof. Aejaz Mohammad Sheikh, who holds multiple academic positions at the university. The translation and review team comprised various experts from the University of Kashmir and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting a collaborative effort in this important initiative. Speaking on the occasion Prof. Nilofer Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing that the translation will enhance constitutional awareness and promote linguistic inclusion in the region. She commended the team’s dedication and hard work in completing this nationally significant task.
