Jammu | :  To mark nationwide observance of World Toilet Day, the Directorate of Rural Sanitation J&K on Wednesday launched UT-wide “Hamara Shauchalay, Hamara Bhavishya” campaign, with a renewed commitment to strengthen sanitation system across Jammu and Kashmir.

The campaign will run from November 19 to December 10, 2025, engaging all districts, blocks and Gram Panchayats.

At the launch, Director General Rural Sanitation J&K Anoo Malhotra said that “Hamara Shauchalay, Hamara Bhavishya,” campaign focuses on enhancing the functionality, aesthetics and long-term sustainability of both Individual Household Latrines (IHHLs) and Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs). “Jammu & Kashmir has made remarkable progress under Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen. Our focus now is on ensuring that every toilet remains functional and dignified. With the launch of ‘Hamara Shauchalay, Hamara Bhavishya’, we are empowering communities to take ownership of sanitation assets and become active partners in achieving Sampoorna Swachhata across the UT,” she said.

The campaign places emphasis on repair and maintenance of CSCs and household toilets; painting and beautification drives to improve the usability and dignity of sanitation facilities; holding awareness programs in schools and communities on hygiene and overall waste management; promotion of Jan Bhagidari, involving youth groups (NSS, NYKS, NCC), local influencers, senior citizens and civil society

As part of the campaign, the department has planned varied activities aimed at reviewing sanitation infrastructure, identifying non-functional CSCs and conducting community-led beautification and repair drives. The sanitation workers across J&K will be felicitated for their vital contribution to public health, and IHHL sanction letters would be handed over to newly approved beneficiaries.

The districts across J&K also have started preparations for Best Toilet Competitions at Panchayat, Block and District levels- recognizing the best maintained IHHLs and CSCs. The winners will be felicitated on December 10, Human Rights Day coinciding with the campaign’s closing ceremony.

The Directorate of Rural Sanitation J&K has urged citizens, community leaders, and youth volunteers to actively participate in the ongoing campaign and work collectively toward a cleaner, healthier Jammu & Kashmir.

Pertinently, J&K has made significant achievements under Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen in expanding the sanitation coverage. So far, 18,49,023 IHHLs and 8355 Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) have been established across J&K under SBMG. These figures highlight the UT’s commitment to ensuring universal access to safe and dignified sanitation facilities.
