Srinagar : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah touched several key issues during a press conference on Saturday on completion of his one year in office.
Replying to a volley of questions during the press conference Chief Minister emphasized that linking the recent Pahalgam attack to the restoration of statehood is unjust to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah reiterated his commitment to abolishing the Public Safety Act (PSA) once statehood is restored, asserting that the elected government should manage law and order. He announced that the candidate for the Budgam by-election would be revealed within 48 hours and indicated plans for a cabinet expansion following the elections. Abdullah assured that all promises made in the party manifesto would be fulfilled within the five-year term, despite acknowledging existing hurdles. He specifically mentioned the need for smart meter installations to facilitate the provision of 200 free electricity units, which he argued is essential for reducing power bills and improving supply. On the topic of statehood, Abdullah clarified that the central government had not linked its restoration to the BJP’s electoral success.
Chief Minister exuded confidence that the promises made in Parliament regarding delimitation, elections, and statehood would be honored. He rejected the notion that an alliance with the BJP is necessary for statehood restoration, citing past negative experiences with such alliances. Abdullah also addressed the absence of an Advocate General in J&K, stating that this situation is detrimental and that the legal representation of the government is crucial. He expressed his intention to potentially become a party in ongoing legal discussions regarding statehood, drawing on his unique experience as both a former Chief Minister of a state and a Union Territory. Furthermore, he highlighted the government’s efforts to promote tourism in J&K, noting the economic benefits it brings to the region. He criticized the current unelected administration for restricting access to tourist destinations, which he believes should be reopened to boost tourism. In conclusion, Abdullah reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, stating that any bill introduced in the Assembly aimed at public welfare would not face opposition from his government.
