Srinagar: Director General Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Tuesday emphasized the multifaceted role of the Jammu and Kashmir Police during the closing ceremony of the 20th J&K Police Martyr’s Memorial Football Tournament 2025.
Speaking on the occasion DGP highlighted the police’s commitment not only to combating terrorism and drug trafficking but also to engaging the youth through sports and rehabilitation initiatives. The tournament served as a tribute to the 1,614 police personnel who have sacrificed their lives in service, including four who were killed in an operation this year. DGP Prabhat outlined the welfare measures for the families of martyrs, which include direct financial support of Rs 1 lakh, assistance for daughters’ marriages, and educational support for children, including free education in police public schools and scholarships for higher education. In 2025, five family members of martyrs received government job appointments, reflecting the police’s commitment to supporting these families. The police have been proactive in organizing various sporting events, with upcoming cricket tournaments planned in Kathua and Kishtwar, alongside past initiatives like Jashn-e-Dal and marathons aimed at promoting peace. Additionally, the police operate ten drug de-addiction centers, treating over 200 patients this year, while also pursuing legal action against drug traffickers. In an effort to broaden the horizons of local youth, 981 students participated in educational and cultural tours across the country this year, an increase from 781 the previous year. The DGP also recognized the achievements of police athletes in national and international competitions. He expressed gratitude to the officers involved in organizing the tournament and acknowledged the support from the Lieutenant Governor, reaffirming the J&K Police’s dedication to its responsibilities and ongoing community engagement.
