CU Kashmir Observes ‘world lung day’, holds pulmonology camp
Ganderbal | : The Health Centre and Directorate of Students Welfare (DSW) at the Central University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Department of Pulmonary Medicine from the Government Chest Disease Hospital, organized a one-day Pulmonology camp themed “Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life” to commemorate World Lung Day as part of Sewa Parv-2025.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. A Ravinder Nath emphasized the importance of lung health, particularly for students, linking it to academic and professional success as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He praised the collaboration between academia and healthcare as a model for societal welfare. Prof. (Dr.) Naveed Nazir Shah, Head of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, highlighted the health crisis in Jammu and Kashmir due to high tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, which contributes to various respiratory and systemic diseases. He called for urgent action from community leaders to address the alarming levels of tobacco consumption. Additionally, he discussed seasonal health challenges faced by Kashmiris, particularly during winter, and provided advice on preventive measures to manage lung health. The camp served as an educational platform for students and faculty, with pulmonology experts offering guidance on maintaining lung health through lifestyle changes and early diagnosis. Dean DSW, Prof. Irfan Aalam, noted the program’s success in raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco and environmental hazards. Medical Officer Dr. Abid Ahmad underscored the critical need for early detection and preventive care for lung diseases, while Dr. Sheeba emphasized the importance of quitting smoking and avoiding pollutants to enhance public health. The event concluded with sapling planting by the Vice-Chancellor and Prof. Shah, symbolizing a commitment to a healthier future.
