Srinagar | : The Department of Atomic Energy’s Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences has approved a three-year research project valued at ₹47.50 lakh for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar.

The project, led by Dr. Vijay Kumar from the Department of Physics, focuses on the compositional engineering of phosphor compounds for X-ray imaging technologies, specifically targeting their storage and scintillation characteristics. The initial funding of ₹22.68 lakh will be allocated for the first year, with additional funds to follow, supporting equipment purchases, staff salaries, research consumables, and travel expenses. NIT Srinagar’s Director, Prof. Binod Kumar Kanaujia, emphasized that this grant highlights the institute’s research capabilities and its potential contributions to healthcare-related imaging technologies. Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman described the funding as a significant milestone that will inspire future research initiatives, particularly in the intersection of science and medical technology. Dr. Kumar outlined the project’s goal of addressing challenges in X-ray imaging by developing innovative phosphor compounds that enhance scintillation and storage properties, which are crucial for next-generation X-ray detectors. This initiative is expected to provide opportunities for young researchers to engage in advanced studies under national funding. Dr. Kumar is a prominent researcher with over 100 publications, 16 edited books, and two patents. He has guided more than eight Ph.D. students and has been recognized among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford University. The project, categorized under “Basic Research in Engineering Sciences,” will also involve collaboration with scientists from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, who will assess the performance and reusability of the synthesized phosphors for X-ray imaging applications.
