Awantipora | : A two-day training and capacity building workshop on Earthquake Risk Mitigation and Management commenced at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation & Reconstruction (DMRRR) of the Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The inaugural session featured Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, President of the Geological Society of India, as the Chief Guest. He emphasized the Government of India’s ongoing efforts to mitigate disaster impacts and the necessity for extensive research in this field. Prof. Gupta commended IUST for organizing such initiatives, which he deemed essential for fostering a safer future for Kashmir. Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo, Vice Chancellor of IUST, highlighted the region’s multi-hazard vulnerability and the urgent need for effective preparedness strategies. He stressed that while earthquakes are unpredictable, preparedness is crucial for minimizing their effects and advocated for a disaster-conscious citizenry in Jammu and Kashmir. He affirmed IUST’s commitment to contributing to the safeguarding of lives and infrastructure. Guest of Honour Prof. Muzaffar Ahmad, a former member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), discussed the significance of disaster-sensitive infrastructure and retrofitting in risk reduction. He praised IUST’s efforts in enhancing community resilience. Additionally, Prof. Abdul Wahid Makhdoomi, Registrar of IUST, pointed out the high vulnerability of Jammu and Kashmir and called for comprehensive preparedness at all levels. Dr. Aabid Hussain Shalla, Dean of Research at IUST, noted that multiple departments and centers at the university are dedicated to advancing research and initiatives in disaster risk management.
