Jammu | : A workshop on ‘ Composting Techniques’ was organized Wednesday by the Department of Environmental Science, Eco Club and Science Club of Government College for Women Parade Ground in collaboration with Department of Ecology, Environment & Remote Sensing (DEERS. The initiative aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices among students and staff of the college aligning with the spirit of Sewa Parv campaign.
In her welcome address, HOD Environmental Science, Dr. Harmanmeet Kour called for launching a sustained campaign in the educational institutions of J&K to promote the concept of ‘Composting at home.’
The Resource Person, Dr. Upma Dutta from Department of Microbiology, SKUAST Jammu led an interactive session and demonstrated simple and effective methods of composting organic waste. She further highlighted the environmental benefits of composting ‘in our day-to-day life.’ It was followed by a practical session involving students for hands-on experience to carry out composting at home.
Dr. Kirti Joshi also addressed the students emphasizing the importance of composting and highlighting how every small step contributes towards building a sustainable future.
The staff present at the programme were Dr. Atiya Syed, Prof. Surbhi Gupta, Prof. Neha Gupta, Dr. Manjulla Gupta, Dr. Pervaiz Ahmed and Prof. Monika Sharma. Dr. Kirti Joshi, Programme Officer EIACP J&K, Dr. Anil Sharma Range Officer, Chetan Gupta and Nittin from DEERS also attended the programme.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Manjulla Gupta from the Department of Chemistry. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Yashika, a student of semester III.
