Srinagar: Following the recent disruptions on Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) due to adverse weather prompted Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Wednesday held a high-level meeting to evaluate restoration efforts and ensure the efficient movement of essential goods. Key officials from various departments, including Public Works, Food and Civil Supplies, and the National Highways Authority of India, attended the top meet.
During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir said that traffic had been partially restored on a single-lane stretch affected by flash floods, and alternative routes via the Mughal Road were being utilized. The Chief Secretary emphasized the need for effective traffic management, directing that only Jammu-bound vehicles be allowed on September 18, followed by exclusive access for Srinagar-bound vehicles the next day. He stressed the importance of avoiding stoppages in vulnerable areas to prevent traffic congestion. The Chief Secretary highlighted the urgency of expediting restoration works to restore double-lane traffic as soon as possible. He instructed divisional administrations to monitor repair efforts closely and provide real-time updates. Additionally, he called for increased manpower and machinery on both NH-44 and the Mughal Road, ensuring that adequate emergency support was available. Recognizing the significance of perishable goods during the harvest season, he prioritized the movement of fruit-laden trucks and essential supplies like petroleum and LPG to protect farmers’ interests. The Commissioner Secretary reported that food grain and petroleum supplies in Kashmir were stable, with ongoing transport of additional consignments since the highway’s partial reopening. The Chief Secretary reiterated the need to safeguard the economic interests of fruit growers and traders, directing field officers to facilitate the smooth transportation of produce. He urged the NHAI to mobilize resources for the swift completion of repair works, emphasizing that restoring NH-44 to full capacity is crucial for maintaining connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country.
