Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of fostering unity between the hill and valley communities in Manipur, condemning the ongoing violence as a disservice to both ancestors and future generations.
Addressing a public rally at Imphal Prime Minister called for collective efforts towards peace and development, highlighting Manipur’s historical significance in India’s freedom struggle, particularly its role as the site where the Indian National Army first raised the national flag. PM Modi also met the victims of the ethnic violence that has affected the region since May 2023, particularly focusing on internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have lost their homes due to conflicts between the Kuki and Meitei communities. He assured the public of the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy, announcing the approval of 7,000 new houses for the displaced. Reiterating his dedication to Manipur’s development, PM Modi noted that the 21st century is pivotal for the North-East, with the region experiencing a significant increase in its development rate since 2014. He highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including road and national highway construction, aimed at enhancing connectivity across the state. This visit marked PM Modi’s first since the outbreak of ethnic conflict, which has severely impacted Manipur’s economy and social fabric. He also paid tribute to the bravery of local soldiers, particularly BSF Constable Deepak Chingakham, who died in action during Operation Sindoor, underscoring the contributions of Manipuri youth to national defense. Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated development projects worth over ₹1,200 crore, including a new Civil Secretariat, IT SEZ Building, Police Headquarters, and unique all-women’s markets across four districts, signaling a commitment to advancing the region’s infrastructure and economic prospects.
