New York: India voted in favour of a resolution in the UN General Assembly that endorses the ‘New York Declaration’ on peaceful settlement between Israel and the Palestinians and implementation of the two-state solution.
The resolution, introduced by France, was adopted with an overwhelming 142 nations voting in favour.
In Friday’s vote, India was amongst the nations that voted in favour of the resolution titled ‘Endorsement of the New York Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.’
All Gulf Arab nations supported the measure. While Israel, the United States, Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga voted against the resolution.
The seven-page declaration came after an international conference held in July at UN headquarters and co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, aimed at reviving talks on resolving the decades-old conflict.
The declaration by the 193-member General Assembly condemned the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that left 1,200 people dead and more than 250 taken hostage.
It also criticised Israel’s retaliatory campaign in Gaza, citing widespread civilian casualties, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and “siege and starvation” that have driven a humanitarian disaster.
