New Delhi|Aug,17: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday nominated Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for Vice President, following a decision made during a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting. Radhakrishnan’s candidacy comes after the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down for health reasons. If elected, Radhakrishnan will take over the role.
In a post on micro blogging social network site “X” formerly called “twitter”Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for Radhakrishnan, highlighting his dedication to community service and his extensive grassroots work in Tamil Nadu. Radhakrishnan publicly thanked Modi for the nomination, expressing his eagerness to serve the nation. Support for Radhakrishnan has been also voiced by various NDA leaders, including Chirag Paswan, Jayant Singh, Pawan Kalyan, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Jitan Ram Manjhi. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also congratulated Radhakrishnan, noting his non-controversial nature and experience.
Radhakrishnan has held several significant positions, including Governor of Maharashtra since July 31, 2024, and previously serving as Governor of Jharkhand and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. The Election Commission of India has scheduled the Vice Presidential election for September 9, following Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation, which has raised questions among opposition leaders about the circumstances surrounding it. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh indicated that there may be more to the resignation than initially apparent, citing a conversation with Dhankhar shortly before the announcement.
