New Delhi| Aug,14 : President Droupadi Murmu extended her greetings to the nation on the eve of the 79th Independence Day, emphasizing the pride and enthusiasm with which Indians celebrate both Independence Day and Republic Day.

The President in her Independence Day message reflected on the painful memories of the 1947 partition, urging the nation to remember the violence and suffering that accompanied this historical event. On this occasion, she paid tribute to the victims of the partition during Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, highlighting the immense loss and trauma experienced by millions.

The President noted that August 14 is observed as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to honor those who lost their lives and were displaced during the partition. She described the catastrophic impact of the partition, which resulted in riots, violence, and one of the largest forced migrations in history, particularly affecting the provinces of Punjab and Bengal.

Despite the challenges faced post-Independence, President Murmu praised India’s successful transition to democracy, which she attributed to the country’s ancient democratic ethos. She highlighted the significance of the Constitution in establishing democratic institutions and emphasized the importance of democracy and the Constitution in shaping India’s destiny.

As the nation prepares to celebrate the 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the celebrations from the Red Fort, the theme of this year’s observance is “Naya Bharat.” This theme reflects the government’s vision for a prosperous and secure future, aiming for a developed India by 2047. The celebrations will serve as a platform to honor the progress made and to inspire continued advancement towards this vision.
