Around 800 participants from 28 States competing in 5 water sports disciplines at Dal Lake

Srinagar: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Tuesday convened a high-level meeting to assess preparations for the inaugural Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF) 2025, set to take place at Dal Lake from August 21 to 23. He highlighted the festival as a significant opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s diverse appeal on a national stage, urging that it be transformed into a grand celebration of local tourism, handicrafts, art, and culture.
The Chief Secretary instructed the Handicrafts & Handloom Department to organize high-quality exhibitions to display the region’s craftsmanship to the anticipated visitors. The festival’s timing aligns with Srinagar’s peak tourist season, providing an ideal chance to leave a lasting impression on athletes, officials, and spectators. The Chief Secretary emphasized the need for the Youth Services & Sports Department to ensure a seamless event, aiming for Srinagar to be considered a regular venue for future festivals by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. He reviewed various logistical aspects, including venue readiness, sports infrastructure, accommodation for athletes, security measures, and promotional activities, directing all relevant departments to execute their responsibilities with utmost efficiency. Commissioner Secretary Sarmad Hafeez shared that the department’s goal is to establish Srinagar as the “Sports Capital of India” and to make the festival an annual event. He noted that approximately 800 athletes and officials from 28 States/UTs will participate in five water sports disciplines over the three days. Competitive events will include Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rowing, while Dragon Boat, Water Skiing, and a unique Shikara Race will be featured as demonstration sports. The festival’s mascot, the Kashmiri Kingfisher, and its logo, which depicts a Shikara against a mountainous backdrop, symbolize the integration of nature, adventure, and Kashmiri heritage. Secretary of the Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul, reported that coordination committees have been established for various functional areas, with dedicated State Liaison Officers assigned to each team for effective communication and facilitation. She also provided details about an elaborate opening ceremony, which will include a drone light show, traditional folk dances, celebrity performances, and food and craft stalls showcasing local cuisine and handicrafts. Organized by the J&K Sports Council in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Sports Authority of India, the festival is poised to be a landmark event celebrating Kashmir’s natural beauty, adventure, and cultural spirit.
