MeT predicts wet spells and issues alerts until July 22; temperatures below normal in J&K

Srinagar: Intermittent rains in Jammu and Kashmir have led to a significant drop in temperatures, with Srinagar recording a maximum of 21.0°C, which is 9.1°C below normal. Other areas such as Qazigund, Pahalgam, and Kupwara also reported temperatures well below seasonal averages. In the Jammu division, temperatures have similarly settled below normal, with Jammu city at 30.6°C, 3.4°C below normal.
The Meteorological Department has forecasted continued rainfall over the next week, predicting light to moderate rain and thundershowers across many locations, with the possibility of intense showers and heavy rain in isolated areas. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued for the region, indicating potential severe weather conditions, including flash floods and landslides. Data from the MeT shows that from June 1 to July 16, Jammu and Kashmir received 157 mm of rainfall, which is close to the normal of 159.4 mm. While some areas experienced normal precipitation, others, including Anantnag and Budgam, faced significant deficits, with Kishtwar and Shopian showing severe deficiencies of 60 to 99 percent. Conversely, Rajouri recorded excess rainfall during the season. The advisory from the MeT warns of the potential for intense showers and advises caution due to the risk of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas during the upcoming rainy periods.
