Forecasts rain, thundershowers till July 17; issues yellow, orange alerts
Srinagar : Changes in weather patterns in Jammu and Kashmir have seen a significant drop in temperatures following a rise, with rainfall recorded across various regions on Monday.
The weather department has forecasted continued wet conditions until July 17, prompting the issuance of Yellow and Orange alerts for the area. Specifically, an Orange alert is in effect for the Jammu division, indicating the potential for isolated heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds until July 16. A Yellow alert is also in place for both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions for the upcoming week. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, the Director of the Meteorological Department, has indicated that generally cloudy weather is expected, with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers likely in many areas, alongside intense showers in select locations until July 17. Following this period, fresh spells of rain and thundershowers are anticipated from July 18 to 21. The department has warned of the possibility of flash floods, landslides, and mudslides in vulnerable areas due to the expected heavy rainfall. In response to the forecast, the Srinagar district administration has issued a weather advisory, urging residents, particularly those near the Jhelum River and its tributaries, to avoid water bodies during the forecasted period of heavy rain and thunderstorms from July 14 to 17. Tourists and local operators on Dal Lake and other water bodies are also advised to refrain from travel until conditions improve. The government has emphasized the importance of safety and has provided emergency contact numbers for public assistance during this period.
