Srinagar: As the Islamic month of Muharram begins Thursday evening in Jammu and Kashmir, the air in several parts of the Valley, particularly Shia-dominated areas, is heavy with devotion and remembrance.
Streets and localities are being adorned with black flags and banners, symbolizing mourning and respect for the martyrs of Karbala.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, marks a period of deep grief and spiritual reflection for the Shia Muslim community, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in the Battle of Karbala.
Reports said that in Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and other parts of central and north Kashmir, preparations are in full swing. Local youth and volunteers in this month set up Sabeels (refreshment stalls), decorate Imam Bargahs, and coordinate logistics for processions.
“Muharram is not just mourning for us, but it is a lesson in resistance and truth. Imam Hussain’s sacrifice is our guiding light,” said Kifiyat, a mourner from Bemina area of Srinagar.
Similarly, religious scholars also deliver special sermons in this month, stressing the values of justice, sacrifice, and unity. Moreover, these days, large congregations are expected in the Shia-dominated areas like Hassanabad, Bemina, Rainawari and Mirgund Pattan, where traditional processions take place throughout the first 10 days of Muharram.
Tahir, another youth from Budgam said, this month brings tears to our eyes but also strengthens our souls. “We teach our children the meaning of courage through Imam Hussain’s example,” he said.
In the meanwhile, the district administrations and authorities have been reviewing arrangements for processions, including traffic diversions, medical assistance, and sanitation.
Officials said that coordination with local religious bodies has been put in place to ensure peaceful observance
