Srinagar/May,28: Ahmad Ayaz, a prominent social activist and national TV debater, has expressed deep concern over the continued infrastructure failures in Jammu and Kashmir, despite years of massive public spending across various sectors.
“Where is the relief despite all these investments?” Ayaz asked, highlighting the stark disconnect between official claims and the everyday experiences of the people. “Year after year, tenders are floated, contracts are awarded, and crores are spent in the name of development — yet public suffering continues unabated.”
Referring to a recent weather event, Ayaz stated, “A brief spell of rain and hailstorm — which should have provided relief — instead turned Srinagar’s so-called Smart City into a disaster zone. Roads were submerged, and power supply collapsed across large parts of the city. Even after 24 hours, only 70% of electricity had been restored. This is not a routine glitch — it is a reflection of a systemic failure.”
He noted that despite substantial investments, especially in drainage and power infrastructure, results remain dismal. “Cities across India face similar weather conditions, but their systems don’t crumble like this. Why do such failures keep happening in Kashmir? Where is the money going?”
Ayaz called for urgent corrective action, demanding the formation of a high-powered, independent technical committee to: Audit the quality and execution of Smart City and other infrastructure projects, Assess the resilience and effectiveness of drainage and power systems, andReview the actual utilization and outcomes of public funds.
“Most importantly, accountability must be fixed,” he added, “whether it lies with contractors, engineers, officials, or planning agencies. The public must not continue to suffer due to inefficiency or mismanagement.”
Ahmad Ayaz concluded with a strong message:
“People don’t need empty slogans — they need real solutions. Infrastructure is not a privilege; it’s a basic right. Kashmir deserves better. The people deserve better.” He urged oversight bodies, and the Chief Minister, to take serious note of the situation and act decisively to ensure transparency, accountability, and meaningful reform.
