Lailat-ul-Qadr, also known as The Night of Power, The Night of Decree, or The Night of Destiny, holds a place of unparalleled significance in Islam. It is believed to be the night when Allah (SWT) first revealed the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). This night is mentioned in the Qur’an as being “better than a thousand months”, emphasizing its immense spiritual rewards. Muslims across the world eagerly seek this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, engaging in deep worship, supplication, and acts of kindness.
Significance Of Lailat-Ul-Qadr: Lailat-ul-Qadr is one of the most sacred and spiritually rewarding nights in Islam. Its importance is highlighted in Surah Al-Qadr (97:1-5): “Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit [Jibreel] descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
1. The Night of Revelation: Lailat-ul-Qadr is the night when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This marks the beginning of divine guidance for humanity and signifies the importance of seeking knowledge and acting upon it.
2. More Rewarding Than A Thousand Months: Allah (SWT) describes this night as being better than 83 years of worship. A single good deed performed on this night is equivalent to a lifetime of devotion, making it an opportunity for immense spiritual growth.
3. Descent of Angels And Divine Mercy: During Lailat-ul-Qadr, angels, including Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), descend upon the earth, bringing peace, blessings, and divine mercy. The presence of angels makes the night filled with tranquility, and sincere supplications are readily accepted.
4. Forgiveness Of Sins: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever stands in prayer on Lailat-ul-Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2014, Muslim 760). This hadith emphasizes that those who dedicate themselves to worship on this night with sincerity and devotion will have all their past sins forgiven, offering them a fresh spiritual beginning.
When Is Lailat-Ul-Qadr? Lailat-ul-Qadr falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, specifically on one of the odd-numbered nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th).
1. Why Is The Exact Date Unknown? The exact date of Lailat-ul-Qadr is not specified in the Qur’an or hadith. Scholars believe this is to encourage Muslims to seek the night by increasing their worship throughout the last ten nights rather than focusing on a single night.
2. The 27th Night of Ramadan: While some scholars believe the 27th night is most likely Lailat-ul-Qadr, the best approach is to strive in worship on all the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan to ensure one does not miss its blessings.

“Since the exact date is unknown, it is essential to seek it diligently in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on odd-numbered nights. Through prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, supplication, charity, and sincere repentance, one can maximize the rewards of this sacred night. May we all be blessed to witness Lailat-ul-Qadr and make the most of its incredible virtues”. Ameen.!

What To Do On Lailat-Ul-Qadr: Muslims engage in various acts of worship and devotion to seek the rewards of this blessed night.
1. Increase Night Prayers (Tahajjud & Nafl Salah): Praying during the night, especially Tahajjud (the late-night prayer), is one of the best ways to seek blessings on Lailat-ul-Qadr. Standing in prayer and reciting the Qur’an with sincerity allows one to attain closeness to Allah (SWT).
2. Recite And Reflect On The Qur’an: Lailat-ul-Qadr is the night when the Qur’an was revealed, making it an ideal time to read, understand, and reflect upon its message. Even if one cannot complete the Qur’an, reciting Surah Al-Qadr, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Nas is highly recommended.
3. Make Du’a (Supplication): The most recommended du’a to recite on Lailat-ul-Qadr is:
اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
“O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
(Tirmidhi 3513). This du’a is a powerful way to seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness. One should also pray for personal needs, guidance, the well-being of loved ones, and the betterment of the Ummah.
4. Seek Forgiveness And Repentance: Lailat-ul-Qadr is the perfect time to repent for past sins and ask Allah for a new beginning. True repentance (Tawbah) involves feeling regret for sins, making a firm commitment to avoid them, and seeking Allah’s pardon.
5. Engage In Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah): Chanting words of praise such as: SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah), Alhamdulillah (All praise is for Allah), La ilaha illallah, (There is no god but Allah) Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). This continuous remembrance keeps the heart engaged in devotion and strengthens faith.
6. Give Charity (Sadaqah): Helping the poor and needy is one of the best deeds on Lailat-ul-Qadr. Since good deeds are multiplied immensely, donating even a small amount can bring great rewards. Providing food for Iftar, supporting orphans, or contributing to humanitarian causes are meaningful ways to give charity.
7. Perform I’tikaf (Seclusion in Worship): Many Muslims observe I’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan by staying in the mosque for deep worship, distancing themselves from worldly distractions, and focusing entirely on their connection with Allah (SWT).
Conclusion: Lailat-ul-Qadr is a night of immense blessings, divine mercy, and forgiveness. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to strengthen one’s faith, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Allah. Since the exact date is unknown, it is essential to seek it diligently in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on odd-numbered nights. Through prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, supplication, charity, and sincere repentance, one can maximize the rewards of this sacred night. May we all be blessed to witness Lailat-ul-Qadr and make the most of its incredible virtues. Ameen.!
