B’gam: Prominent religious scholar Ghulam Rasool Hami has criticized the growing trend of religious debates on social media, where some individuals, particularly self-styled preachers, engage in disputes for personal gain.
Hami alleged that certain individuals exploit religious issues for likes, views, and income from YouTube and Facebook, rather than engaging in meaningful or scholarly discussions. He said that true Ulema do not fight on social media but handle disagreements with dignity, adhering to the principles of Adab (respect), Shariah, and morality. He further emphasized that society is not in a position to engage in unnecessary conflicts and instead must focus on unity and standing against discrimination. Hami called upon senior scholars and leaders to take responsibility and make the public aware of those who misuse religious discourse to divide society. He warned the public to be cautious of those who prioritize financial gains over religious integrity, using social media as a tool for self-promotion rather than guidance. Addressing the detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Hami urged authorities to allow him to to address Friday sermon. “Govt should allow him to fulfill his religious responsibility. People are waiting to listen to him” he said . (KNS)
