Ganderbal: The Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) marked the culmination of International Women’s Day-2025 celebrations with a thought-provoking webinar, bringing together distinguished academicians and administrators to celebrate the achievements and resilience of women across generations.
In his inaugural address, Vice Chancellor Prof. A Ravinder Nath paid rich tributes to the determined spirits of Sarojini Naidu, the ‘Nightingale of India,’ who played a pivotal role in advocating for women’s empowerment. Reflecting on her legacy, he said, “Sarojini Naidu defied societal norms and emerged as a strong voice for Indian women. At a time when women’s voices were often subdued by rigid patriarchal structures, she stood tall, championing their rights and paving the way for their active participation in governance, politics, and social reform. Her leadership not only strengthened India’s freedom struggle but also laid the foundation for the progress women have made today.” Prof. Nath further emphasized that empowering women is not merely a responsibility but an absolute necessity for a just and progressive society. “With platforms like these, we continue to foster a dialogue that drives the momentum towards gender equality. The Central University Kashmir remains committed to nurturing women’s academic and professional growth, encouraging them to lead and shape a more equitable future,” he asserted. He urged participants to work collectively towards a society that upholds gender equality, economic independence, and broader representation for women in all spheres.
Deans of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, research scholars and students were present during the programme.
Eminent speaker, Prof. Viney Kapoor Mehra, former Vice Chancellor of BRANLU, provided a historical perspective on International Women’s Day, tracing the evolution of women’s roles from the Vedic era to the modern age. She highlighted how Indian women in the Vedic period enjoyed a status in society and actively contributed to intellectual and spiritual discourses. “Despite socio-political constraints during the medieval era, remarkable women such as Rani Lakshmibai emerged as symbols of resistance and leadership,” she noted.
Prof. Mehra also celebrated the contributions of contemporary Indian women, recognizing their trailblazing achievements across diverse fields. “Women today are excelling in politics, science, entrepreneurship, and sports. From Indira Gandhi’s strong political leadership to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s pioneering work in biotechnology, Kalpana Chawla’s remarkable space exploration, and PV Sindhu’s triumphs in sports, Indian women continue to shatter barriers and redefine success on a global scale.” Acknowledging the contributions of Kashmiri women, Prof. Mehra praised their resilience and their unwavering efforts in preserving the region’s rich cultural heritage. “Kashmiri women have played an instrumental role in safeguarding the traditions, language, and artistic legacy of the Valley, ensuring that the cultural tapestry of Kashmir remains vibrant and intact.”
Addressing the gathering, the event’s Convenor, ICC Chairperson, and Dean of International Affairs, Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, underscored the significance of this year’s theme— ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.’ She stressed the need for fostering safe and inclusive spaces for women, particularly in educational institutions and workplaces. “Such initiatives are instrumental in raising awareness and inspiring young women to take on leadership roles. At CUKashmir, we reaffirm our commitment to policies that promote women’s education, safety, and equal opportunities,” she remarked. Prof. Tiwari encouraged participants to actively engage in efforts that empower women through academic and professional growth, ensuring that their contributions are recognized and celebrated. Prof. Viney Kapoor Mehra also announced prize winners for debate and elocution competition on the occasion.
