Srinagar: Kashmir has received significant snowfall over the past five days, raising hopes that the valley will be able to host the much-anticipated Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Gulmarg. Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had expressed uncertainty about organizing the event due to inadequate snowfall. However, with fresh snow blanketing the region, the chances of hosting the Winter Games have improved. A senior official at J&K administration told Kashmir Horizon that that with the recent snowfall in Gulmarg and other higher reaches in Kashmir, there are chances that dates of the winter games will be announced within two days. “Hopefully it is positive news for everyone and these games are important for economy revival in the region,” he added.

Uncertainty Looms Before The Fresh Snowfall: Previously, CM Omar Abdullah, while skiing in Gulmarg, had acknowledged the challenges posed by a lack of snow and emphasized the need to wait for further weather developments. He had pinned hopes on the western disturbances predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which forecasted snowfall from February 26 onward. Talking to reporters during his skiing session in Gulmarg, the Chief Minister stated, “There is a prediction of snowfall for three days; after it, experts from the Ski Federation will assess the slopes for skiing. If they find the conditions suitable, we will announce dates for Khelo India Winter Games.”

Importance Of Snowfall For Gulmarg’s Tourism, Winter Sports: Gulmarg’s slopes are internationally renowned, attracting skiers and adventure enthusiasts from across the world. Omar Abdullah, an avid skier himself, is often seen skiing in Gulmarg every winter.  Chief Minister expressed optimism that the IMD’s prediction would prove accurate, ensuring enough snowfall for the Winter Games. “If the region gets the expected snowfall over the next three days, we can hold Khelo India in the first week of March. Beyond that, rising temperatures would make it impossible to conduct the event,” he added.

Legacy Of Khelo India Winter Games In Gulmarg:  Since the abrogation of Article 370, the Lieutenant Governor’s administration has been organizing the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg as part of its efforts to promote winter sports. The elected government now aims to continue this tradition. The event typically witnesses participation from athletes across the country. However, this year, climate change had initially cast doubts over the games, affecting not just the administration but also local businesses and hoteliers who depend on the tourism influx generated by the event.

Postponement Of The 5th Edition Due To Snow Scarcity: The second leg of the 5th edition of Khelo India Winter Games, initially scheduled for February 22-25, 2024, in Gulmarg, had to be postponed due to insufficient snowfall.  The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council confirmed the postponement via social media, stating that a reassessment would take place once snow conditions improved. “The 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, initially set for February 22-25, 2024, has been postponed due to insufficient snowfall. A new assessment will be conducted once snow conditions improve, and the revised update will be announced accordingly,” the council wrote on X. This marks the second consecutive year that the event has faced delays due to inadequate snowfall. In 2023, the games had to be pushed to February after a dry January.

Previous Success Of Khelo India Winter Games: Despite challenges, the Khelo India Winter Games have been gaining popularity since their inception in 2020. The first leg of the 2024 edition was successfully held in Leh from January 23 to 27, featuring ice sports like ice hockey and ice skating. Ladakh emerged as a top performer in the first leg, winning seven medals, including four gold. Tamil Nadu secured five medals, including three gold, while Maharashtra finished with the highest overall medal count (10), though with only two gold medals, placing them third. In 2023, Maharashtra had dominated the Games, winning 20 skating medals, including six gold. Telangana and Karnataka also made notable contributions, with Telangana securing two gold medals and Karnataka one.

Rising Popularity, Growing Participation: Since its inception, the Khelo India Winter Games have witnessed a steady rise in participation. The inaugural edition in 2020 saw nearly 1,000 athletes, including 306 women. By 2021, the number had increased to 1,350, and in 2022, participation exceeded 1,500, showcasing the growing appeal of winter sports in Jammu and Kashmir. The 2023 edition saw over 1,200 participants, including more than 700 athletes, 141 support staff, 113 technical officials, and 250-plus volunteers. A total of 136 medals were up for grabs. For the first time, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India, oversaw the technical conduct of the Games alongside National Sports Federations and the Indian Olympic Association.

A Critical Year For Winter Sports In India: With fresh snowfall now covering Gulmarg, authorities are hopeful that the Khelo India Winter Games can proceed as planned in March 2025. This year’s event holds particular significance as it will determine the future of winter sports development in the region. Experts believe that consistent investment in infrastructure, training, and event organization will be necessary to establish Jammu and Kashmir as a global winter sports destination. The government’s continued efforts to host these games reflect its commitment to boosting tourism and sports development.

Kashmir Horizon View: Kashmir’s recent snowfall has rekindled hopes for hosting the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in Gulmarg. While earlier uncertainty loomed over the event, fresh snow has improved the chances of its successful execution. The administration remains optimistic, with experts set to assess the skiing conditions before making an official announcement. As winter sports gain popularity in India, events like the Khelo India Winter Games play a crucial role in promoting adventure tourism and nurturing young athletes. With the right support and favorable weather conditions, Gulmarg could soon solidify its position as a premier winter sports hub in South Asia.
