Vande Bharat Trial Run on Srinagar-Katra Track Bridges Barriers, Boosts Connectivity

Srinagar: The much-awaited Vande Bharat Express train has officially arrived in Kashmir, and its trial run was successfully conducted on Saturday along the Srinagar-Katra route. This marks a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development, as it aims to improve connectivity, especially in the challenging terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.
Indian Railways conducted the trial run of the first Vande Bharat train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) railway station to Srinagar railway station. This high-speed train, designed to tackle harsh winter conditions, represents a leap forward in the effort to modernize transportation in the region. According to railway officials, all preparations for the trial run were completed, and the train performed as expected. A senior railway officer told Kashmir Horizon that the arrival of the Vande Bharat Express in Kashmir is a source of immense pride for Indian Railways. The Vande Bharat train has been engineered to handle the severe winters of the region while providing comfort and efficiency. This makes the train an ideal choice for the challenging conditions that the Kashmir Valley is known for. The official said “This is a big step toward bringing Kashmir closer to the rest of the country. The rakes will be moved from Srinagar to Budgam with testing to take place between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) and Baramulla (BDGM),” he added. The testing is a critical component of the ongoing efforts to ensure that the train operates smoothly in the difficult terrain of the region. These trials are designed to ensure that the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) section is fully operational ahead of the scheduled inauguration in the first week of February 2025. The USBRL project aims to provide seamless connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, enhancing both passenger and freight movement in the region.
The Vande Bharat Express is expected to be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is anticipated to flag off the train from Katra. However, the exact date of the inauguration has yet to be confirmed. Once inaugurated, the train will run on the newly constructed USBRL section, which spans a total of 272 kilometers. “Once the Commissioner of Railway Safety gives the green signal for operations on the Katra-Baramulla section, Prime Minister Modi will flag off the train. While the inauguration date is still being finalized, it will mark a major milestone in improving connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir,” said the railway official.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link project has long been a vision for the region, aiming to connect Kashmir to the national rail network. The successful trial run of the Vande Bharat Express is a testament to the technical advancements made in this critical project. PM Modi had earlier hailed the USBRL project as an “engineering marvel” during a virtual inauguration ceremony of the Jammu Division of Indian Railways earlier this month. Prime Minister Modi’s virtual inauguration of the Jammu Railway Division marked a historic step in integrating Jammu and Kashmir into the national railway network. The division’s opening fulfills a long-pending demand from the region and signals the beginning of a new era in transportation for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi emphasized the significance of the USBRL, noting its ability to overcome numerous geographical and technical challenges. The project has not only enhanced connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India but also facilitated the transportation of goods and services, making the region more accessible for business and tourism. In his speech, PM Modi referred to the Jammu Railway Division’s establishment as “a significant milestone” in ensuring better connectivity and economic growth for the region. The division’s opening is expected to usher in new opportunities for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, enhancing regional development and bringing the Union Territory closer to the rest of India.
In addition to the successful trial run, Northern Railways has announced the train timings for the Katra-Srinagar route, providing travelers with multiple options for their journey. The Vande Bharat Express will offer a fast and efficient service between the two destinations, while the Mail Express trains will cater to those preferring different schedules. The Vande Bharat Express will depart from Katra at 8:10 AM, and it is scheduled to arrive in Srinagar at 11:20 AM. For passengers who prefer a later departure, the Mail Express will leave Katra at 9:50 AM, reaching Srinagar at 1:10 PM. Another Mail Express service will depart from Katra at 3:00 PM, arriving in Srinagar at 6:20 PM.For those traveling in the opposite direction, the return journey from Srinagar to Katra will offer three options. The Mail Express will leave Srinagar at 8:55 AM and arrive in Katra at 12:05 PM. The Vande Bharat Express will offer a midday option, leaving Srinagar at 12:45 PM and reaching Katra at 3:55 PM. Lastly, another Mail Express will depart from Srinagar at 3:10 PM and reach Katra at 6:30 PM.These timings offer passengers the flexibility to choose their preferred departure and arrival times, ensuring that travel between Srinagar and Katra is more convenient and accessible than ever before. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Express is expected to be a game-changer for the region, offering passengers a more modern, faster, and comfortable way to travel. The Vande Bharat Express is equipped with several cutting-edge features designed to make travel more efficient and comfortable. The train features automatic doors, advanced air-conditioning systems, and high-tech passenger information systems. The train’s sleek design and modern amenities make it a significant step forward for Indian Railways and a much-needed upgrade for the region. The Vande Bharat Express is not just about speed; it is also about improving the overall travel experience. The train’s comfortable seating, efficient interior layout, and user-friendly technology are designed to meet the needs of today’s travelers, making long-distance journeys more pleasant. The train is also designed with energy efficiency in mind, contributing to the sustainability of the rail network.
The launch of the Vande Bharat Express on the Srinagar-Katra route is expected to have a transformative effect on Kashmir’s economy and tourism industry. Faster and more reliable transportation will make it easier for tourists to visit the region, boosting the hospitality industry and contributing to local businesses. Additionally, better connectivity will help facilitate the movement of goods and services, enhancing trade and commerce. With improved infrastructure, Kashmir is expected to become a more attractive destination for both domestic and international tourists. The easy access to pilgrimage sites like Shri Mata Vaishno Devi will encourage more visitors to explore the region. Similarly, the enhanced connectivity between Srinagar and Katra will make it easier for people from other parts of India to visit Kashmir for leisure or business purposes. Moreover, the development of rail infrastructure in the region is expected to create jobs and boost local economies. The construction of new stations, the improvement of existing infrastructure, and the growth of related industries will lead to employment opportunities, benefiting local communities.
