Srinagar: The long-awaited Srinagar-Katra train service, part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), is expected to commence operations after January 20, bringing a new era of connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of India.
The completion of necessary preparations, alongside successful trial runs, signals the imminent launch of the service, which promises to offer faster and more efficient transportation for passengers traveling between Srinagar and Katra.
Northern Railway’s Strategic Reorganization; New Rail Division At Jammu: In line with the development of the USBRL project, Northern Railways has reorganized its Firozpur Division to form a new Jammu Division. This restructuring is aimed at optimizing railway operations and enhancing efficiency across the region. The newly created Jammu Division will oversee five critical sections: Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur, Srinagar-Baramulla, Bhogpur Sirwal-Pathankot, Batala-Pathankot, and Pathankot-Joginder Nagar. The combined length of these sections will span approximately 742.1 kilometers, ensuring the continued growth of railway infrastructure and smoother connectivity within the region. Additionally, Kashmir has long advocated for the creation of a separate railway division for the region. This proposal, if implemented, would streamline operations, facilitate more localized decision-making, and improve services, further boosting the region’s transport capabilities. The formation of a distinct division dedicated to the development of Kashmir’s rail network would be a significant step toward enhancing the region’s infrastructure and aligning it with the country’s broader transportation goals.
CRS Inspection, Final Launch Preparations: As part of the final preparations, the Commissioner of Railways Safety (CRS) inspection for the Katra-Reasi section, covering a 17-kilometer stretch, has been rescheduled to January 7-8. This inspection is essential to ensure the safety and operational readiness of the rail link. Senior officials from various railway divisions will accompany the CRS during the inspection. Following this, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Union government, clearing the way for the project’s completion. Initially planned for January 5-6, the inspection was postponed to accommodate logistical requirements. Upon completion of the CRS assessment, the final phase of the USBRL project will be cleared for operations, enabling the full 272-kilometer stretch from Udhampur to Baramulla to become operational.
Train Timetable, New Services: Northern Railways has unveiled the schedule for the Katra-Srinagar route, which includes several train services to cater to varying travel preferences. The Vande Bharat Express will depart from Katra at 8:10 AM, arriving in Srinagar by 11:20 AM. Additionally, two Mail Express services will operate daily from Katra to Srinagar, departing at 9:50 AM and 3:00 PM, with arrival times at 1:10 PM and 6:20 PM, respectively. For the return journey, the Mail Express will depart from Srinagar at 8:55 AM, reaching Katra by 12:05 PM. The Vande Bharat Express will leave Srinagar at 12:45 PM, arriving in Katra at 3:55 PM. Another Mail Express service will leave Srinagar at 3:10 PM and complete its journey to Katra by 6:30 PM.
Successful Trial Run On Anji Khad Bridge: On December 25, Railways successfully conducted a trial run with an electric engine on the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge, located in Reasi district. This marks a significant milestone for the USBRL project, showcasing the region’s capacity to overcome its challenging terrain. The trial included a 32-coach train traveling between Katra Railway Station and Reasi. Designed to withstand the region’s seismic conditions and rugged landscape, the Anji Khad Bridge reinforces the robustness of the rail network and its ability to endure natural adversities. The Katra-Reasi rail link is expected to be officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 26, 2025, coinciding with the launch of a new sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express, connecting Delhi and Srinagar.
Extended Vistadome Service to Promote Tourism: In a further effort to boost the region’s tourism industry, Northern Railways has announced an extension of the Vistadome train service on the Budgam-Banihal route, running from January 1 to January 31, 2025. This service, featuring trains with glass-domed coaches, provides passengers with panoramic views of the stunning Kashmir Valley, attracting tourists keen on experiencing the beauty of the region. Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railways, emphasized that the Vistadome train service is part of a broader initiative to promote rail tourism in Kashmir. The train will operate daily, except on Fridays, and will follow its usual route, stopping at Budgam, Srinagar, Awantipora, Anantnag, and Qazigund before reaching Banihal. For a one-way journey, ticket prices will be ₹940, while a round trip can be purchased for ₹1,880. The train’s design, with wide windows and reclining seats, allows passengers to enjoy uninterrupted views of the valley’s breathtaking landscapes.
State-Of-The-Art Vistadome Coaches: The Vistadome train, inaugurated on October 19, 2023, by Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, is designed to offer a unique travel experience. Equipped with large windows, reclining seats, and an observation lounge, the Vistadome coaches are ideal for travelers wishing to immerse themselves in the scenic beauty of Kashmir. With a seating capacity of 40, the train features revolving chairs and a glass roof, allowing passengers to enjoy panoramic views throughout the journey. The strategic placement of the coaches ensures that passengers can make the most of the natural beauty during their travels.
A Bright Future for Kashmir’s Rail Network: The commencement of the Srinagar-Katra train service marks a pivotal moment in the development of Kashmir’s rail infrastructure. The successful completion of trial runs, the rescheduled CRS inspection, and the introduction of new services like the Vistadome train are set to significantly transform the region’s transportation landscape. Improved connectivity promises to foster tourism, trade, and regional development, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. With the Katra-Reasi rail link and the launch of the new Vande Bharat Express, Jammu and Kashmir is poised to experience a wave of infrastructure improvements, making travel more convenient and efficient.
Kashmir Horizon View: The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is ushering in a transformative phase for Kashmir’s railway infrastructure. With the successful trial runs, new services on the horizon, and improved connectivity, the region is set to become more closely integrated with the rest of India. The launch of the Katra-Srinagar train service, expected after January 20, 2025, is not just a transportation upgrade but also a catalyst for the region’s tourism and economic development. The USBRL project will play a pivotal role in bridging gaps, fostering regional growth, and ensuring Kashmir’s future prosperity. Furthermore, the creation of a separate division for the Kashmir region would accelerate the development of its rail network, ensuring that the unique needs of the region are adequately addressed. As the railway system in Jammu and Kashmir expands, it promises to bring the region closer to the national mainstream while enhancing the quality of life for all who call it home.
