Srinagar : Chairman Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front ( J&K PDF) and former Minister Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has expressed reservations over the proposal of one nation – one elections to ” conduct simultaneous Lok sabha ( LS) and assembly polls , followed by synchronized local body polls within 100 days. He said there were apprehensions among cross sections of the society that the proposal may go against the fundamentals of the constitution by weakening the basic federal structure of the country.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday Hakeem while expressing his reservations against the proposal of one – nation – one elections has said there was a dire need for a legally sustainable framework that can re-align the whole electoral cycles in length and breadth of the country. He said the challenges confronting the proposal of one nation – one nation are conceptual, financial, constitutional and even logistical. He said the proposal has to be implemented to a country as vast as India; a country that holds a great cultural, and topographical diversities. So there was a need for a legally sustainable framework that can re-align the electoral cycles. PDF Chairman has urged the government not to go in haste in the matter as it carries vast ramifications ahead observing that better would be to handover the one nation – one election Bill to a joint parliamentary select committee to reach at a broader consensus.
