Srinagar: Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the much-anticipated Vande Bharat Express train, which will provide direct connectivity between Kashmir and New Delhi. “In January, as per the Prime Minister’s schedule, the inauguration will take place. According to railway officials, this project is expected to be completed by December this year,” Singh told reporters. The minister said every single aspect from the safety angle needs to be checked, and all these things are being thoroughly inspected on a large scale.
Officers and technical teams are repeatedly visiting to ensure everything is up to standard. “A lot of hard work has been put into this project, which is a massive undertaking. Once every aspect is verified, only then the date for its inauguration be decided,” he said. There is a huge load of trucks and vehicles on the highway, which gets closed during winter. The project is expected to provide relief to the people of the valley and increase tourism and business. “It is a gift to the people of Kashmir from the NDA government and the Prime Minister,” Singh said. He said that while the project was previously halted, work had been expedited over the past eight years and is now on track to be completed by December. This development marks a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure and is poised to transform the region’s economic landscape. The Vande Bharat Express is set to begin operations in January 2025, linking the national capital to the Kashmir Valley, which has long struggled with limited and inefficient transportation options. The introduction of this high-speed, state-of-the-art train service will provide a faster and more comfortable mode of travel for passengers, reducing travel time and improving accessibility between Kashmir and the rest of India.
The Vande Bharat Express will also pass through the Chenab Rail Bridge, which is a remarkable engineering feat. Standing as the world’s highest railway bridge, this bridge symbolizes the ambitious nature of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project and its contribution to India’s expanding infrastructure. The USBRL project is a key part of the government’s efforts to improve transportation in the Kashmir Valley, connecting the region more effectively to the rest of the country. The project has already made significant strides in its development, with several engineering marvels that reflect India’s growing capabilities in infrastructure projects. Among the most notable features of the USBRL project is the Chenab Rail Bridge, which stands 359 meters above the riverbed—35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. This bridge is the world’s highest arch railway bridge and is designed to withstand extreme conditions, including wind speeds of up to 260 km/h and high-intensity earthquakes. The USBRL project is not just about connecting Kashmir to the rest of India; it is also about showcasing India’s advanced engineering and design skills. The railway line will pass through 38 tunnels and span 927 bridges, covering a total distance of 119 kilometers. These include several strategically located bridges and tunnels that will enhance the safety and stability of the route. One of the standout features of the project is Tunnel T-49, India’s longest transportation tunnel at 12.75 kilometers, which will further aid in securing safe and efficient travel through the mountainous terrain of the region. The successful construction of the cable-stayed Anji Khad Bridge in Reasi, which spans the Anji River, is another significant achievement under the USBRL project. During his recent visit to inspect the progress, Minister Ravneet Singh expressed his appreciation for the work done on the Anji Khad Bridge, calling it an architectural marvel and the first cable-stayed bridge on the Indian Railways network. He described the bridge as a testament to Bharat’s engineering brilliance, connecting not just two mountains but also the dreams of people in the region with reality.
The Vande Bharat Express and the USBRL project are expected to have a profound impact on the local economy in Kashmir. The improved connectivity will provide a vital lifeline for businesses in the region, especially those dealing with perishable goods such as apples and dry fruits, which often face delays when transported via road. The new rail link will enable faster transportation to major markets in New Delhi, reducing the time taken to deliver goods from Kashmir to the national capital from days to just 13-14 hours. This will help ensure better market prices for Kashmir’s produce, benefiting local farmers and businesses alike. Minister also highlighted that the railway project will create thousands of jobs in the region, both directly and indirectly. These employment opportunities will come not just from the construction and operation of the rail network, but also from ancillary industries that will develop as a result of improved infrastructure. This includes businesses in sectors like tourism, hospitality, and retail, which are expected to thrive as the region becomes more accessible to both domestic and international visitors. The railway network’s potential to stimulate tourism cannot be overstated. With the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express and other rail services, Kashmir is likely to experience an increase in both domestic and international tourist arrivals. The enhanced connectivity will make it easier for people to visit the Valley, which is already known for its scenic beauty and cultural heritage. The ease of access provided by the rail network is expected to open up new avenues for tourism and attract more visitors to the region, further boosting local businesses and supporting regional development. During his visit to the project site, Railways Minister Singh emphasized the importance of safety and quality in the construction process. He assured the public that all safety measures are being rigorously followed to ensure that the project meets the highest international standards. “Safety remains our priority,” he stated, adding that every aspect of the project is being meticulously evaluated to guarantee the highest levels of security for passengers once the trains are operational. The rail link’s design incorporates advanced technology and materials that make it one of the safest railways in the world. The use of cutting-edge steel and concrete in the construction of bridges and tunnels is a testament to the project’s commitment to durability and reliability. The Chenab Bridge, in particular, has been designed to endure the harsh environmental conditions of the region, including extreme weather and seismic activity.
