Heavy Snowfall disrupts electric supply to many areas of Kashmir: KPDCL
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterWhatsappTelegramEmail

The people of Kashmir are facing an escalating crisis due to steep increases in electricity bills. This has left households across the valley struggling to make ends meet, leading to widespread dissatisfaction and frustration. Despite high expectations from the National Conference (NC) under the leadership of Omar Abdullah, the party has failed to address this pressing issue, leaving the residents disillusioned and angry.
The Broken Promises of NC: During the last elections, residents across Jammu and Kashmir placed their trust in the NC, voting in large numbers with the hope of seeing real change in their lives. Promises of addressing basic needs such as affordable electricity and economic relief were a significant part of the party’s manifesto. However, these assurances remain unfulfilled, and the NC has been accused of neglecting the plight of ordinary citizens. Omar Abdullah’s Government has faced criticism for its lack of concrete policies and action. Instead of prioritizing local issues, the administration has been accused of focusing on symbolic gestures and political rhetoric. This failure to act on pressing concerns, like the increasing electricity bills, has left the people questioning the very leadership they once trusted.
A Glimpse Into The Crisis In Budgam: Kashmir Horizon team recently visited several areas of Budgam district, including Nagbal, Darwan, Salyan Chontinard, Ringazabal, kharian and Raiyer. The findings were alarming. Residents reported being burdened with electricity bills far beyond their capacity to pay, with amounts frequently exceeding ₹1500. For the impoverished communities in these areas, where most homes consume minimal electricity—usually powering just two or three light bulbs—such charges are nothing short of exorbitant. Many families, already grappling with financial hardships, find these bills an unbearable burden. A resident of Ringazabal expressed his despair, stating, “We can barely afford food and other basic necessities. How can we possibly pay such high electricity bills? Despite using minimal electricity, the bills are skyrocketing.”
Pdd’s Inaction And Rising Discontent: Residents have repeatedly approached the Power Development Department (PDD), hoping for a resolution. However, their appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Instead of reducing the charges, the department has imposed further hikes, aggravating the situation. In Charar-e-Sharief, residents voiced similar grievances. Many shared that they had voted for the NC, expecting relief from rising utility costs. “We thought NC would address our issues and give us some breathing space. But nothing has changed; if anything, the situation has worsened,” lamented one resident. The demand for a proper audit of electricity consumption has been growing louder. Locals insist that the bills should reflect actual usage, not arbitrary figures. “Our electricity consumption is minimal, yet we are charged as if we’re running factories. This is unjust,” another resident remarked.
Widespread Disillusionment With The Govt: The rising electricity bills have exposed a larger issue: the disconnect between the government and the people it serves. Residents feel abandoned, with no one to address their legitimate concerns. “This government doesn’t care about the poor. Our voices are ignored, and our struggles are overlooked,” said a resident of Nagbal. The issue has also highlighted the inadequacies of the NC’s governance. The party, which came to power on the back of promises of reform and relief, now stands accused of failing to live up to its commitments. The lack of action on issues like electricity bills has eroded public trust, with many questioning the competence of the current leadership.

“The residents of various areas have spoken loud and clear. Their demands are simple: a fair billing system, accountability from the PDD, and a government that listens to and acts on their grievances. It is now up to the authorities to rise to the occasion and deliver on these demands. Failure to do so will only deepen the disillusionment and further alienate the people from the political system. For a government that promised change, the time to act is now.”

An Urgent Appeal For Intervention: The residents of Budgam, Charar-e-Sharief, khansahib,Beerwah and other affected Districts areas have made an urgent appeal to higher authorities. They are demanding the formation of an independent team to survey actual electricity consumption and revise the billing system accordingly. “We urge the government to take immediate action. This is not just about bills; it’s about our survival,” said a resident from Kharian. Moreover, locals have appealed for a comprehensive review of the PDD’s practices. They argue that the department’s inefficiencies and arbitrary billing have caused immense suffering and demand a transparent and fair system.
The Need for Govt Accountability: The rising electricity bills in Kashmir are not just a financial burden; they represent a deeper crisis of governance. The NC government must take immediate and decisive action to address this issue if it hopes to regain the trust of the people. Mere promises and political rhetoric will no longer suffice; what Kashmiris need is tangible relief and a government that prioritizes their well-being. This situation also serves as a wake-up call for other political parties and leaders. The people of Kashmir have made it clear that they will not tolerate neglect or inefficiency. They expect their leaders to deliver on their promises and address their concerns with sincerity and urgency.
Conclusion; A Call for Justice: The plight of Kashmir’s residents must not go unnoticed. The government, particularly the NC, has a moral and political obligation to resolve this crisis. By addressing the issue of rising electricity bills and ensuring a fair and just billing system, the administration can begin to rebuild the trust it has lost. The residents of various areas have spoken loud and clear. Their demands are simple: a fair billing system, accountability from the PDD, and a government that listens to and acts on their grievances. It is now up to the authorities to rise to the occasion and deliver on these demands. Failure to do so will only deepen the disillusionment and further alienate the people from the political system. For a government that promised change, the time to act is now. The voices of Kashmir’s residents must be heard, and their struggles must be addressed with empathy and urgency. Anything less would be a betrayal of the very mandate the NC claims to represent.
