Srinagar: Kashmir is on the verge of a historic milestone as the region prepares to connect with Kanyakumari through a seamless railway network. The landmark project, aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting economic prospects, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 26 next year (2025), as announced by Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu.
According to officials, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is nearing completion, with all pending work expected to be finalized by December. Key sections, such as the track between Sangaldan and Reasi, have been inspected and cleared for operations. Construction on the Reasi-Katra section, including Tunnel T-33 and four stations along the route, is progressing rapidly.
“Testing on the Katra-Srinagar track will conclude by December, ensuring Kashmir’s rail integration by January,” said Bittu. He emphasized the project’s transformative potential, stating, “Efficient railways and highways elevate our global standing. This project will bring Kashmir closer to the rest of India and contribute significantly to the region’s economy.”
Engineering Marvels of the USBRL Project: The USBRL project is a testament to India’s engineering prowess, featuring 38 tunnels spanning 119 km and 927 bridges covering 13 km. Among its highlights is the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge at 359 meters above the riverbed—35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. Built to withstand high wind speeds and powerful earthquakes, the bridge exemplifies cutting-edge construction. Key sections of the Kashmir Rail Project completed in recent years include:
Baramulla-Qazigund (2009)
Qazigund-Banihal (2013)
Udhampur-Katra (2014)
Banihal-Sangaldan (inaugurated by PM Modi in February 2024)
A Game-Changer For The Region: The New Delhi-Srinagar train will redefine connectivity, facilitating easier travel and trade between Kashmir and the rest of the country. Officials have lauded the project’s potential to place the region on the global map, while ensuring safety remains a priority throughout its development. With its official inauguration slated for Republic Day, this railway project symbolizes unity, progress, and a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir.
