Srinagar : A team from the Food Safety Department of Srinagar carried out an intensive inspection drive on Saturday targeting food business operators in the areas surrounding Anjum Masjid in Qamarwari and the main and inter markets of Bemina.
The inspections focused primarily on bakeries, restaurants, and other food establishments to ensure compliance with hygiene and safety standards.
“The initiative is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to maintain stringent food safety measures across the city, with a particular emphasis on good hygiene practices (GHP) and correct labeling on packaged food products, especially baked goods such as breads and cakes”, Assistant Commissioner YameenUlNabi, who was also part of the team.
During the inspections, several food business operators were issued warnings and provided with instructions to improve hygiene standards. In some cases, penalties were imposed under Section 69 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, which allows for the imposition of fines for non-compliance with food safety norms.
“We are committed to ensuring that all food establishments, particularly those that cater to large numbers of people, adhere to the highest standards of food safety and hygiene,” said Assistant Commissioner YameenUlNabi.
“Our inspections today were focused on identifying any lapses in hygiene, improper labeling, or substandard practices in food handling. Where necessary, we have taken action and will continue to monitor these businesses closely.”
The inspection team visited several bakery shops and restaurants, scrutinizing food preparation areas, storage conditions, and the labeling of packaged products.
The officials emphasized the importance of maintaining clean kitchens, properly sanitizing food preparation tools, and using fresh ingredients to prevent contamination.
Labels on food products were also checked to ensure that they clearly mentioned manufacturing and expiry dates, as well as the ingredients used, to help consumers make informed choices.
Several bakery owners acknowledged the importance of the inspection drive. “We welcome these inspections as they remind us of the importance of adhering to strict hygiene practices,” said Shabir Ahmed, the owner of a popular bakery shop. “We have been implementing changes to ensure that our food is prepared in a clean and safe environment.”
While most food business operators were found to be following proper safety measures, the team issued specific instructions for the improvement of labeling practices, particularly on baked goods like breads and cakes. “Good labeling is critical not just for regulatory compliance but also for the safety of consumers. Customers should be aware of what they are eating, including all ingredients and the freshness of the product,” said YameenUlNabi.
The inspection team also provided guidance on maintaining proper storage conditions, avoiding cross-contamination, and following hygiene protocols in the handling of food, particularly in high-demand establishments such as bakeries and restaurants. “Strict hygiene is non-negotiable, especially in businesses that serve ready-to-eat,”
