Jammu: In a series of high-energy rallies across the Pir Panchal region of Jammu & Kashmir, Union Home Minister Amit Shah delivered sharp attacks on both Pakistan and prominent opposition leaders, while emphasizing the government’s plan to involve local youth in security forces to combat militancy. Shah promised that Jammu & Kashmir’s youth, especially from the Pahari, Gujjar, and Bakerwal communities, would be given opportunities to serve the nation, but only through recruitment in the police, military, and other security forces.
Speaking at back-to-back rallies in Mendhar, Surankote, Thanamandi, Rajouri, and Kathua, Shah said, “We will give guns to the youth of J&K, but these guns will be handed over through police and military recruitment so that they can fight militancy, protect their homeland, and secure their future.” Shah emphasized that these opportunities were crucial for bringing peace and stability to the region, which had long suffered under the shadow of militancy and political instability.
One of the major themes of Shah’s speeches was the security situation on Jammu’s borders. He lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, claiming that it had ensured peace and stability along the Line of Control (LoC). “There has been no ceasefire violation on Jammu borders for a long time now because Pakistan is scared of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decisive actions. If Pakistan dares to fire even a single bullet, we will respond with an artillery shell,” Shah declared, reinforcing the government’s tough stance on national security.
This was the first time Shah directly addressed the issue of Pakistan in his ongoing political campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates in the region. His remarks reflected a clear message of deterrence, stating that any misadventure from across the border would be met with a powerful response.
In a pointed attack on the National Conference (NC) leadership, Shah accused its chief, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, of promoting militancy in Jammu & Kashmir. “Since 1990, this region has been destroyed by the menace of militancy, and it was Dr. Farooq Abdullah who gave guns to the youth, pushing them toward a path of destruction,” Shah alleged. He emphasized that the BJP-led government, in contrast, was offering J&K’s youth a chance to fight militancy through legitimate means by joining the security forces.
Shah also took aim at Dr. Abdullah’s son, Omar Abdullah, stating that neither father nor son could do anything to reverse the Pahari reservation, a key issue in the ongoing campaign. “Let me tell you this clearly—if Dr. Farooq and Omar Abdullah turn themselves upside down, even then we will not reverse the Pahari reservation. In fact, we will extend reservation benefits to promotions as well,” Shah assured the crowd, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the Pahari, Gujjar, and Bakerwal communities.
The Home Minister did not hold back in his criticism of what he called the “three families”—the Abdullahs, Muftis, and Gandhis—blaming them for decades of instability and bloodshed in the region. “These three families are responsible for the killing of 40,000 people. It was under their rule that J&K did not witness Panchayat, BDC, and DDC elections for a long time,” Shah said, accusing the opposition of deliberately stalling democratic processes to maintain their grip on power.
He contrasted this with the current government’s achievements, noting that over 30,000 representatives across Panchayats, Block Development Councils (BDCs), and District Development Councils (DDCs) were now actively participating in governance. “Today, the fruits of democracy are being enjoyed by thousands of elected representatives in Jammu & Kashmir, thanks to the vision and leadership of the BJP,” Shah said, positioning the party as the harbinger of true democracy in the region.
A significant part of Shah’s speech in Mendhar was dedicated to promoting the BJP candidate Murtaza Khan, whom he described as the first Pahari to champion the cause of reservation for his community. Shah shared a personal anecdote about Khan, revealing how the candidate had often approached him with memorandums demanding reservation for the Paharis. “I once told him, ‘Reservation will be given for sure, but will you contest the election on a BJP ticket?’ He responded that if I came to Mendhar and held a rally, he would contest. Today, Murtaza is not only contesting but I am here addressing this rally,” Shah said, adding that if Khan wins, he would return to Mendhar for an overnight stay.
Shah’s endorsement of Khan as a dedicated leader fighting for the rights of the Pahari community was a strategic move to solidify BJP’s foothold in the region, which has a significant population of Paharis, Gujjars, and Bakerwals.
Shah’s reiteration of the government’s commitment to Pahari reservation, not just in recruitment but also in promotions, was met with cheers from the crowd. He made it clear that there would be no rollback of this reservation, despite the opposition’s criticism. “Even if the Abdullahs protest, we will stand firm on this issue. Paharis, Gujjars, and Bakerwals will not only receive reservation in recruitment but also in promotions within government jobs,” Shah stated.
The assurance came at a time when the issue of reservation for these communities has been a hot topic in Jammu & Kashmir’s political landscape, particularly in the run-up to the assembly elections.
Shah also outlined the BJP’s broader vision for the future of Jammu, with a specific focus on transforming the region into a world-class tourism destination. “We have a clear plan to upgrade Jammu’s tourism infrastructure and make it a global tourist hub. This will bring prosperity and economic growth to the entire region,” Shah said, emphasizing the party’s commitment to development and progress.
The vision of a booming tourism industry in Jammu was coupled with promises of better infrastructure, improved connectivity, and increased employment opportunities for the youth.
Throughout his speeches, Shah urged the people of Pir Panchal to vote for BJP candidates, presenting the party as the only force capable of delivering security, development, and justice for the marginalized communities in the region. He repeatedly emphasized that under the BJP’s leadership, Jammu & Kashmir had witnessed a significant transformation, from ending militancy to strengthening democracy.
