The Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) is a flagship savings scheme launched by the Central Government to ensure a secure financial future for girl children across India. Designed specifically for girls under the age of 10 years, this account offers a multitude of benefits, making it an attractive option for parents who are looking for long term savings and financial security for their daughters.
One of the most significant features of the SSA is its high interest rates, which are among the highest offered for small savings schemes in the country. Currently, the SSA offers a curative interest rate that ensures that the investments grow significantly over time. In addition to this, the account offers tax exemptions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, providing relief for the guardian or parent investing in the account. These tax benefits, combined with the high interest rates, make it a compelling option for savings. The SSA scheme is a long term saving plan, allowing deposits made for up to 15 years and the account matures after 21 years from the date of opening. This ensures that funds are available for the girl’s higher education or marriage, thus fulfilling major milestones in her life without financial constraints. To make the scheme even more accessible, the account can be opened with a minimum deposit of just Rs 250, and during any financial year, the minimum required deposit is Rs 250, with the maximum limit being Rs150000. This flexibility allows parents from various economic backgrounds to benefit from the scheme.
Importantly, the SSA can be opened either at any post office or authorized bank, and accounts can be created for a maximum of two girls per family. However, in the case of twin or triplet births, more than two accounts can be opened. Further more withdrawals from the SSA can be made once the girl attains the age of 18 or has passed the 10th standard, providing financial support during pivotal educational stages. Recognizing the importance of this scheme, a nationwide campaign was organised by Department of Posts, India between 25th August, 2024 to 30th August, 2024, across all post offices in India. The campaign focussed on raising awareness about the SSA scheme in educational institutions, Anganwari Centres, social welfare departments and other community spaces. It saw Overwhelming participation, with a large number of girl children being enrolled under this scheme. In Jammu and Kashmir Postal Circle alone especially in Srinagar Postal Division, an impressive number of girl children were enrolled under the SSA scheme during this campaign, highlighting the success of these outreach efforts. Due to the positive response, the campaign has been extended for an additional 20 days, providing an opportunity for more parents to enrol their daughters. This extension ensures that every eligible girl child gets the benefit of this highly beneficial scheme. Closure of the SSA account occurs after 21 years from the date of opening, or at 21 years from the date of opening, or at the time of the girl’s marriage, provided she has reached the age of 18. Withdrawals for marriage are allowed within a specific window-one month before or three months after the date of marriage.
I highly recommend that parents take advantage of this extended campaign and secure their girl child’s future by enrolling them in the Sukanya Samriddhi Account. The scheme is not only a gateway to financial security but also a step toward empowering the girl child for a brighter tomorrow.

Boosting Awareness Of The Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme, A Personal Appeal For Consistent Campaign:- Despite its clear benefits, there is a significant gap in awareness, particularly in many rural and underprivileged communities. As someone deeply invested in the well-being of these children, I personally urge the Postal Department to take proactive steps to address this gap.

Sukanya Samriddhi Account scheme is a beacon of hope for the future of millions of young girls across India. However, the success of this scheme hinges on awareness and participation.

The Importance Of Continuous Campaigns: To ensure that every eligible girl child can benefit from the SSA Scheme, it is crucial that Postal Department undertakes campaigns on a regular basis. Sporadic efforts, while valuable, may not be enough to penetrate deeper into the masses and reach those who need this support the most. Continuous and consistent efforts would ensure sustained visibility for the scheme and increase participation. These campaigns should be conducted periodically, even after the initial phases, to remind parents and guardians about the opportunity to invest in their daughters’ futures.
Leveraging Media For Broader Reach:- In the current digital era, social media is an incredibly powerful tool to raise awareness. The Postal Department can utilize platforms like Facebook, Twitter, You tube and Instagram to share information, success stories, and updates on the scheme. Short, engaging videos or posts explaining the benefits of the SSA scheme, how to apply, and who qualifies would help to demystify the process and encourage more families to participate. Alongside social media, traditional forms of media such as newspapers, radio, and television can also be extremely effective in reaching audiences that may not have access to or familiarity with digital platforms. Regional newspapers, local FM radio stations, and community television programs can serve as vital conduits for spreading the message to areas where digital penetration remains low. Posters and pamphlets displayed at post offices, schools, and health centres can reinforce these messages further.
Ensuring No Eligible Girl Is Left Behind: – The ultimate goal of these campaigns should be to ensure that no eligible girl child is left behind. It is disheartening to think that many families may miss out on this incredible opportunity simply due to a lack of awareness. Every girl deserves the chance to have a financially secure future, and the SSA scheme can play a pivotal role in ensuring that. To achieve this, the Postal Department must consider working closely with local governments, non-governmental organizations, and educational institutions. These partnerships could help expand the reach of campaigns, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and identify families that might be unaware of the scheme. Outreach programs conducted in collaboration with these partners can help to identity eligible beneficiaries, ensuring that the message of the SSA scheme reaches every corner of the country.
Conclusion: The Sukanya Samriddhi Account scheme is a beacon of hope for the future of millions of young girls across India. However, the success of this scheme hinges on awareness and participation. I firmly believe that with continuous campaigns and strategic use of both social and traditional media, the Postal Department can make a significant impact in ensuring that no eligible girl child remains excluded from this beneficial scheme. Let us work together to secure a brighter and more prosperous future for the next generation of daughters.
