5 children among 8 family members killed in fatal road accident in Anantnag

Srinagar: Eight people, including five children, lost their lives when the vehicle they were travelling in rolled down the Sinthan-Kokernag Road in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday afternoon.
An official said that a Maruti Swift vehicle bearing registration number (JK03H9017) lost control and rolled down the road near Aarshan Hut, approximately 20 km from Daksum Naka. The official said the accident resulted in the immediate death of all eight passengers on board.
“Due to a lack of network connectivity in the area, it took some time to inform the district administration in Anantnag,” he said, adding, “Upon receiving the information, medical, police, and CRPF teams, along with local residents, rushed to the scene. Unfortunately, all occupants of the vehicle were found dead, and their bodies were recovered and transported to SDH Kokernag.”
Sub District Magistrate (SDM) Kokernag, Suheel Ahmad Lone, confirmed that eight members of a single family, including five children, died in the fatal accident.
The family was travelling from Kishtwar via Sinthan Top towards Marwah, the SDM said, adding that postmortem examinations were conducted at SDH Kokernag, and the deceased, identified as residents of Kishtwar, were transported to their native village for last rites.
The deceased family members were identified as Imtiyaz Rather (son of Ghulam Rasool Rather, age 45); Afroza Begum (wife of Imtiyaz Ahmad Rather, age 40); Reshma (wife of Majid Ahmad, age 40); Areeba Imtiyaz (daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad, age 12); Aniya Jan (daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad, age 10); Abaan Imtiyaz (daughter of Imtiyaz Ahmad, age 6); Musaib Majid (son of Majid Ahmad, age 16 and Mushail Majid (son of Majid Ahmad, age 8). A police official said that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his grief over the tragic accident. In a condolence message, he said, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the loss of precious lives in an unfortunate road accident in Daksum, Anantnag. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family members during this hour of grief. I have issued instructions to the District Administration to provide all necessary assistance to the affected family.”
Political leaders including National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Party’s Vice President Omar Abdullah also expressed grief over the tragic accident. They extended their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for peace for the departed souls and strength for those who have suffered this immense loss,” read the party’s post on X.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a posted on “X” formerly called twitter said “Party President Mehbooba Mufti has expressed deep shock over the tragic loss of eight family members in the Daksum Sinthan Top accident that included five children. My heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. In these trying times, I urge the authorities to provide immediate compensation and support to the affected families. May the departed souls rest in peace.”
In his condolence Statement Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari said, “I am deeply grieving over this tragedy. It is painful to learn that among the eight deceased members of a single family, there are two women and five children aged between 6 and 16. I find myself at a loss for words to express my grief and sorrow over this tragedy. May Almighty Allah grant the departed souls the highest place in Jannah. And, may Allah give the much needed patience to the kith and kin of the victims to bear the pain of this inconsolable and irreparable loss.”
In his condolence message ,Hakeem Yaseen while expressing hearfelt grief and sorrow over the death of 8 members from a single family near Daksum Kokernag , has conveyed his sympathies with the bereaved family. He has prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and has urged the Govt :to provide ex-gratia relief to the bereaved family.
In his condolence Statement the Chairman Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Front (J&K PDF)and former Minister Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen while expressing hearfelt grief and sorrow over the deaths conveyed his sympathies with the bereaved family. He has prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and has urged the Govt :to provide ex-gratia relief to the bereaved family. He also urged the traffic police to streamline traffic movement on kishtwar – simthan – Anantnag road adding that rash driving on this hilly road stretch cause frequent traffic accidents especially during summer months. He has called for stringent action against traffic violators.
