Srinagar: Youm-e-Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions is being observed across Jammu and Kashmir today on Wednesday . On this day muslims in Jammu & Kashmir and other parts of the world pay homage to the martyrs of Karbala. For smooth Muharram procession in Summer Capital Srinagar the Traffic Police Department has issued an advisory.
The day is observed as a symbol of sacrifice and mourning, recalling the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), in the battle of Karbala on the 10th of Muharram, 1383 years ago according to the Hijri calendar and 1342 years according to the Gregorian calendar.
The first month of the Islamic calendar, Muharram 2024 started on July 07, 2024, and the 10th day of Muharram known is being observed as the Day of Ashura today on Wednesday. Officials said that an elaborate security arrangement had been made to avoid any untoward incident on Ashura.
“Alam” and “Zuljanah” processions would be taken out in all districts across Kashmir, Jammu province and Ladakh region. Ashura processions would also be taken out in Baarji Harwan, Bemina, Gund Khawaja Qasim, Mirgund, Hanjiveera, Balhama, Panear, Tral, DevsarKulgam, Sofipora Pahalgam, Chattergul, Achabal, Dangerpora, Sonawari, and several other places in Kashmir Valley.
In central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Ashura processions would be taken out from Gazi Manzil to ImambargahYousufabad, Magam, Iskinderpora Beerwah, and Sonpah. Ashura processions would also be taken out in Ladakh’s remote Turtuk, Partappora, and Chushut.
The first 10 days of Muharram, which mark the beginning of the new Islamic year, hold great significance amongst the Shia community who also commemorate the death of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s grandson Imam Hussain (AS) during the Battle of Karbala, a city in modern Iraq, in the year 680 CE.
The authorities have decided to allow 10th Muharram processions in all the Valley districts while the Traffic Department issued an advisory. Thousands of Shia mourners are expected to participate in the ‘Alam’ and ‘Zuljanah’ processions today on Wednesday across J&K. Government allowed a Muharram procession on Monday 8th Muharam Ul Harram for the second consecutive year in Srinagar that passed off peacefully.
In view of processions, the Traffic Police Department has issued a detailed advisory and traffic has been diverted from routes where processions are supposed to pass on Wednesday.
Traffic Advisory: In the wake of the Youm-i-Ashoora being observed today on Wednesday the 10th Muharram Traffic Police Department has issued a traffic advisory to ensure smooth movement across affected areas during the main procession in Sinagar city.
According to an order issued by the Traffic Police Department the procession, scheduled for 17th July 2024, will impact traffic in Zadibal and adjacent localities. To facilitate the general public and motorists, the following traffic diversions have been implemented: Traffic Diversions: Traffic moving towards Zadibal will be diverted at Firdous Cinema-Mill Stop, Lal Bazar, Bota Kadal & Chattipadshahi. Motorists traveling between Soura and Lal Chowk are advised to use Dr. Ali Jan Road.
It further reads, for those traveling between Zakoora and Lal Chowk, Foreshore Road is recommended. Vehicles from Gojwara towards Zadibal will be redirected at Firdous Cinema towards Dr. Ali Jan Road via Sazgaripora.
Traffic from Lal Chowk heading towards Badamwari via Rainawari will be diverted at Chattipadshahi towards Kathidarwaza. Residents of Lal Bazar area are encouraged to use Kanitar-Hazratbal-Foreshore Road.
The advisory further reads, the general public is urged to avoid unnecessary travel to areas where Youm-i-Ashoora processions are underway to minimize inconvenience. Medical emergencies will be facilitated through the shortest routes.
