LS adjourned till Monday over NEET paper leak

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till Monday minutes after it was convened on Friday amid ruckus over the opposition’s demand for a discussion on the issue of NEET-UG 2024 paper leak case.
The uproar in the house led to back to back adjournments forcing the Speaker to adjourn it till July 1.
As soon as the House met for the day, Opposition members were on their feet seeking the acceptance of an adjournment motion to suspend all business and discuss matters related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
Earlier, Congress MPs Ranjeet Ranjan and Gaurav Gogoi gave an Adjournment Motion notice in Lok Sabha to discuss alleged irregularities in NEET-UG 2024 and the ‘failure’ of the National Testing Agency (NTA) that conducted the last exam on May 5.
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the NEET issue and demanded to discuss the matter in the House, before the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address.
Speaking in the house Rahul Gandhi said: “We wanted to give a joint message to the students of India, on behalf of Opposition and Government – that we consider this an important issue. So, we thought that to respect students we will have a discussion on NEET, a dedicated discussion.”
“There should be a discussion on NEET here in the House. I urge the Prime Minister that this concerns our youth and deserves a thorough and respectful discussion,” he said.
Speaker Om Birla insisted that discussion on Motion of Thanks to President’s Address be taken up first. He said that it is not good for the parliamentary democracy to postpone that motion.
Speaking in the house, Parliament Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Opposition MPs kept pushing for a dedicated discussion on the NEET issue even as all matters can be taken up during the discussion on President’s address which was scheduled in the bulletin for the day.
The lower House resumed after Rijiju move Motion of Thanks to the President’s address to Parliament.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on Monday, and the Rajya Sabha session started on Thursday. Both sessions will end on July 3.
