Srinagar: The heat wave over the plains of Jammu and Kashmir continues even as Qazigund, Kokernag and Baderwah experienced record hottest days on Sunday throwing normal life out of gear, officials said.
The heat wave over the plains of Jammu & Kashmir and hot and dry weather over hilly areas is likely to continue during the next 3 days, Meteorological Centre Srinagar said.
The MeT office said that Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway experienced the season’s hottest day with the maximum temperature soaring to 33.5°C on Sunday, the second highest in the last 43 years. The maximum temperature at Qazigund was recorded at 33.6°C on May 31, 1981.
Similarly, Kokernag in south Kashmir also witnessed a day temperature of 31.5°C on Sunday, the second highest during the past 22 years. On May 15, 2001, Kokernag recorded 32.6°C.
Meanwhile, Baderwah in Jammu division also recorded the season’s second hottest day with the maximum temperature reaching 34.8°C after 23 years on Sunday. Earlier on May 30, 2000, the weather station was recorded at 37.6°C, the MeT office said.
The heat wave in Jammu continues to affect normal life during the next three days with the maximum temperature recorded at 42.5°C on Sunday.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 32.7°C on Sunday and it was 6.6°C above normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of season.
The maximum temperature recorded at the tourist spot of Pahalgam at 28.1°C, Kupwara at 30.5°C, and at the ski resort of Gulmarg in the north was 22.6°C on Sunday, the MeT office said.
The night temperature recorded in the weather stations of Kashmir valley during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday was 1-4°C above normal.
