Srinagar: Meteorological Centre Srinagar on Sunday predicted fairly widespread rain and snow at scattered places during the next two days in Jammu and Kashmir.

The MeT office said there is a possibility of scattered light rain and snow between February 26 night and February 27 forenoon.

From February 28-29, the weather will be partly to generally cloudy amidst the possibility of light rain/snow at isolated places.

There is a possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at most places with heavy rain/snow at a few middle & higher reaches from March 1 to 3, the MeT office said.

It said a few places may experience thunder/lightning/hailstorms accompanied by gusty winds during the period.

Barring Gulmarg the night temperature improved across the Kashmir valley but stayed below freezing point in most of the stations on Sunday. Gulmarg also received 2.8mm of rainfall and 2.0cm os snowfall during the past 24 hours.

The MeT office said the minimum temperature during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Srinagar was recorded at 0.5°C against the -3.1°C recorded the night before. It was 1.0°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The maximum temperature also improved with bright sun appearing during the day, recorded at 0.9°C above normal in Srinagar.

The night temperature again slipped at Gulmarg and it remained the coldest place with a low of -10.0°C against the -9.0°C the previous night. It was 4.2°C below normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.

The mercury at the tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a low of -6.0°C against the -7.4°C the previous night and it was 2.5°C below normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of -1.6°C and the picnic spot Kokernag in south Kashmir settled at -3.8°C recorded the previous night.

Kupwara also witnessed a drop in the minimum temperature and recorded –3.0°C against the -4.5°C the previous day and it was 3.0°C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district on Sunday, the MeT office said. UNI
