Srinagar : The long dry spell is likely to come to an end this weekend with the possibility of light to moderate rain, snow over many places in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.
Meteorological Centre Srinagar predicted that the weather will generally remain cloudy with the possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches from January 25–27.
From January 28–29, the weather will remain generally cloudy with the possibility of light to moderate rain and snow over the lower, middle, and higher reaches of many places in Jammu and Kashmir.
The MeT said there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow in widespread places, most likely during January 30-31, while light rain or snow can occur in scattered places on February 1.
The MeT office has also issued an advisory in view of the weather system that may lead to the temporary closure of roads of higher reaches and important passes of Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna and Razdan Pass, Zojila Pass, and other higher routes of Jammu and Kashmir during January 28–31.
Travelers have been advised to plan their trip accordingly in view of the weather forecast.
Night temperatures rose slightly in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday as Srinagar recorded a low of -5.0°C against the -5.3°C recorded the previous night. It was -2.7°C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 11.0°C on the previous day, which was 4.7°C above normal against 6.9°C.
Pahalgam remained the coldest place, with a low of -6.2°C against the -6.9°C recorded the previous night. It was still 1.3°C above normal for the tourist hot spot of south Kashmir.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of -4.5°C against the 5.2°C recorded a day ago, while the picnic spot in south Kashmir’s Kokernag recorded a low of -1.5°C against the -2.6°C recorded the previous night.
There was a slight rise in the night temperature at Gulmarg, recorded at -4.5°C against -4.0°C on Monday. However, it was 3.7°C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.
Kupwara recorded a low of -4.9°C against the -6.0°C recorded the previous day. It was 2.0°C below normal for the frontier Kashmir district during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
