Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, former chief ministers and other political leaders have widely condemned the killing of a retired police officer Mohammad Shafi Mir in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on early Sunday

The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha condemned the terror attack.

“Pained beyond words on the dastardly terrorist attack on retired police officer, Shri Mohammad Shafi Mir while he was giving a call for prayer in the mosque. Cowards responsible for this barbaric act will not be spared, Lt Governor said in a post on X .

The retired SSP , was fired upon at Gantmulla village on the Baramulla Uri highway while he was offering the call of prayers in the local mosque. He was shifted to a medical facility in Baramulla where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar described the retired Police officer killing as “senselessly”. Condemning such heinous acts unequivocally, they affirm that violence can never be tolerated in any form.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti said innocent people have become collateral damage to maintain the “facade of normalcy” touted by the government of India.

“Five jawans martyred in a militant ambush, three innocent civilians tortured to death in custody by army , many still battling for their lives in hospitals & now a retired SP killed. Innocent people have become collateral damage to maintain the facade of normalcy touted by GOI. One doesn’t know what to condemn more? Killing of five army jawans who laid their lives in the line of their duty or civilians tortured to death in the most barbaric way by those supposed to protect us from the enemy? Every life in J&K is in peril & GOI wants to brush everything under the carpet only because the ground reality will puncture their fake narrative. How long will this go on before the country wakes up?” she said in a post on X.

Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Chief Minister J&K, Ghulam Nabi Azad said he was alarmed by the rising terrorist attacks in J&K.

“…Government must take decisive measures to crack down on terrorism and ensure the safety of all citizens!,” Azad said in a post on X.

Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said the cowardly act goes on to show the true colours of killers as the slain was shot upon while giving a call for prayer.

“Shame on those people who still feel the killers are carrying out Jihad. Killers are killers irrespective of which faith they belong . And we as a society need to rise against such killings,” he said.

Peoples conference chairman Sajad Lone while condemning the killing said that “evaluating security threat is a science and can’t be left to likes and dislikes, and whims’.

“And hope that JK police recognises the challenges facing it”, he said on X.

BJP leader Altaf Thakur said the dastardly act of killing of 72 year old retired police officer at Gantamulla, Baramulla by those who have no religion.

“The sons of the devil can’t even tolerate Azaan as Muhammad Shafi, the retired Ssp was killed while giving Azaan in a masjid. Terror and terrorists have no religion,” Thakur said, while urging police to punish culprits involved in the act sternly.

All Parties Hurriyat Conference(APHC) described the killing of a senior police officer as “blot” on humanity and only bringing “disgrace” to the people and place where they are committed.

APHC expressed pain and sorrow at the killing of a former police officer Mohammad Shafi Mir in Baramulla and expressed sympathy and condolences with the bereaved family.

“Such killings are a blot on humanity and only bring disgrace to the people and place where they are committed”, the APHC said in a statement.

It added “they are no solution to resolve conflicts and only cause grief and suffering”.

“In principle APHC condemns them as it condemns all state and non-state acts of force, violence, killing and disempowerment”, the statement reads.

APHC said that each day blood is spilled in J&K, yet claims of normalcy are made.

“We have always believed that unless the basic issue of Kashmir is not addressed, unfortunately we will keep witnessing bloodshed”, the statement added.
