In a historic milestone, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has experienced an unprecedented surge in tourism, welcoming an astounding two crore tourists up to November this year. This marks a momentous turnaround for the region, setting a new record and signaling a robust revival in its tourism sector. Union Tourism Minister G. Kishen Reddy, addressing Parliament, emphasized the historic nature of this surge. He highlighted that this influx, the first of its kind since Independence, is a testament to the dynamic efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Reddy credited PM Modi for not only being a powerful ambassador for India’s tourism industry but also for showcasing the country’s immense tourism potential during his foreign visits. The impact has been profound, attracting lakhs of tourists to India, thus bolstering the tourism sector. The role of international platforms, particularly the G-20 meetings, was underscored by Reddy. He pointed out that these gatherings not only enhanced India’s global standing but also served as a catalyst for tourism promotion. The G-20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in May received special mention, credited with luring a substantial number of foreign tourists to the picturesque Kashmir valley. The staggering 155% increase in overall tourist arrivals in 2023, compared to the preceding years of 2021 and 2022, paints a picture of a burgeoning tourism sector in India. Strategic initiatives played a pivotal role in achieving this success, including the exploration of offbeat destinations, the revival of film and border tourism, and the promotion of homestays. As the demand for Kashmir tourism continues to rise with the onset of winter, airlines arriving at Srinagar International Airport report 100 percent occupancy. Recent snowfall in the upper reaches, coupled with the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, has attracted tourists, both local and foreign, to the valley in substantial numbers. Javed Anjum, Director of Srinagar airport told Kashmir Horizon that 60-66 flights are operating daily, with all flights reporting full occupancy. The winter season, post-COVID-19, has become the busiest period for airlines operating at the airport.

“To accommodate the growing number of tourists, there has been a push for infrastructure development. This includes improvements in transportation networks, upgraded accommodations, better roads, enhanced facilities at tourist spots, and improved connectivity, benefiting both tourists and locals. Heli Services: In a significant development aimed at improving connectivity and addressing the challenges posed by winter in the mountainous Doda district, a subsidized helicopter service took off from Jammu on Tuesday. The inaugural ceremony, held in Doda, was attended by Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police Abdul Qayoom, marking a crucial step towards enhancing accessibility and promoting tourism in the region. The move to introduce a subsidized helicopter service holds the promise of not only improving connectivity but also unlocking opportunities for tourism, particularly during the winter months. Winter often presents challenges in certain regions, making it difficult for residents to access essential services and hindering the potential for tourism development. The initiative is part of the larger efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to resume subsidized helicopter services, providing much-needed respite to the people residing in hilly districts of Jammu Division during the winter season. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar took proactive steps by convening a meeting with Deputy Commissioners of Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, and other stakeholders to assess the preparedness for this eagerly anticipated revival. Kumar instructed Deputy Commissioners to appoint Nodal Officers and conduct joint inspections in collaboration with Global Vectra Helicorp’s technical team. The objective is to ensure the readiness of designated helipads in their respective districts, facilitating seamless operations of the subsidized helicopter service. This initiative responds to the essential need for reliable transportation during the winter, especially in regions like Doda, where harsh weather conditions often impact traditional modes of travel. By leveraging helicopter services, the administration aims to bridge the accessibility gap and provide a lifeline to residents who may face challenges due to geographical constraints and inclement weather. Additionally, there is a recognized need to extend helicopter services to other sectors of Kashmir, such as Keran, Karna, and Gurez, where people encounter difficulties during the winter months. The expansion of subsidized helicopter services to these areas would not only address transportation challenges but also stimulate economic activities and promote tourism potential in these picturesque regions. The revitalization of helicopter services aligns with the administration’s commitment to comprehensive development and improved quality of life for residents in hilly and challenging terrains. It reflects a proactive approach to overcoming geographical barriers and ensuring that every citizen has access to essential services throughout the year.
